The wines produced in Madrid are continuing to strengthen their reputation and carve out a place for themselves on the Spanish scene. Tagonius is one of the most representative wineries in the D.O., located in the Arganda subzone, an area with a rich and well-documented wine-making heritage. Its high-altitude vineyards, bordered by the Tajuña River, bring out all the properties of Syrah, a variety native to the Rhône Valley that's adapted well to different terroirs. A prime example is Tagonius Syrah 2023, a red wine that's spent seven months in French oak barrels to give it complexity and elegance.

Tagonius Syrah 2023 is a single-varietal wine made exclusively from Syrah, a grape variety native to the Rhône Valley (France) that develops all its character in Tagonius's vineyards. The plots, located in moorlands bordered by the Tajuña River, in the Arganda subzone (southeast of the Madrid region), are located in loamy soils with a high limestone content and basic pH. Cultivation on trellises allows optimal exposure of leaves and bunches and are conducive to full ripening and intense varietal expression.
During vinification, the grapes that went into making Tagonius Syrah 2023 remained in stainless steel tanks at low temperature for 72 hours, making it possible to preserve the primary aromas. Fermentation was then carried out at a controlled temperature with daily pumping over, followed by 20 days of maceration. The wine was then aged for seven months in French oak barrels, achieving a harmonious balance between the flavours from Syrah and the subtle flavours from the wood.
Tagonius Syrah 2023 reflects Bodegas Tagonius's commitment to quality and precision at every stage of the process. The winery has 35 hectares of vineyards distributed between plots with highly mineral soils, located in the river valley, where conditions are conducive to optimal ripening and long ageing. In 2000 it opened modern facilities on the site of the historic Justo del Pozo Olmeda winery founded back in the nineteenth century, bringing a contemporary outlook to a longstanding winemaking tradition.
Bodegas Tagonius is one of the leading wineries of the new wave of Madrid wines, creating modern-style wines with the incorporation of foreign varieties. It is located about 40 km southeast of Madrid, in the Arganda subzone, the largest of the three that make up the D.O. Vinos de Madrid; a region with great potential, whose wines were already consumed in the Royal Court in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Specifically, Tagonius is situated on the banks of the Tajuña River (Tagonius in Latin), a tributary of the Tagus. Its vineyards stretch across various plots of highly mineral-rich soils in the river valley. In total, it manages 25 hectares of its own vineyards and an additional 50 hectares of controlled vineyards, where the tempranillo grape coexists with international varieties such as syrah, merlot, and cabernet sauvignon. It also cultivates the white varieties malvar and moscatel de grano menudo.
The grapes are processed in modern facilities built in the year 2000 on the same site as the old Justo del Pozo Olmeda winery, dating back to the 19th century. In its large barrel room, French and American oak from the best cooperages coexist.
