The wines made in Madrid are gaining fame and market presence. Tagonius, one of the main wineries in the Denominación, is located in the Arganda subzone, an area with a long and noteworthy winemaking history. Its vineyards, located on a plain delimited by the river Tajuña, bring out all the flavours of Syrah, a variety originally from the Rhone area. Take, for instance, Tagonius Syrah 2022, a red that’s been aged for 7 months in French oak and displays aromas of ripe fruit, spices and flowers such as violet, so characteristic of this variety, with a very enticing, flavourful and fresh palate.

General Information

Tagonius Syrah 2022 is a single-varietal made from Syrah, a grape originally from the Rhone (France), which expresses all its flavours in Tagonius’s vineyards. These plots, with gobelet-trained vines, are located on a plain delimited by the river Tajuña in the Arganda subzone (Madrid region) in loam soils with a high lime content. The leaves and bunches are effectively  exposed and the berries attain full ripeness, bringing out all the characteristics of the Syrah variety.

The grapes spent 72 hours in stainless steel vats at a low temperature before being fermented at a controlled temperature with daily pumping-over. Maceration was carried out for 20 days. The wine was finally transferred to barrels and aged for 7 months in French oak. The result is a red with a good balance between the varietal notes characteristic of Syrah and notes from oak.

Bodegas Tagonius is located some 40 km southeast of Madrid, in the municipality of Tielmes in the subzone of Arganda, the largest of the three that make up the D.O. Vinos de Madrid. It’s an area with great potential, whose wines were drunk at the Royal Court back in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Tagonius is based on the bank of the river Tajuña, an affluent of the Tajo, an area with very minerally soil.

Bodegas Tagonius is notable for the perfect ripening of the grape varieties it cultivates and long ageing periods. It owns 35 hectares of vineyards divided into plots on the fertile plain that produces very high-quality grapes. In 2000 it built its modern facilities on the site of the nineteenth-century Justo del Pozo Olmeda winery.

The red wine Tagonius Syrah Crianza 2022 (D.O. Vinos de Madrid) is delicious with stuffed turkey or stewed woodcock.

The winery

Bodegas Tagonius is one of the leading wineries of the new wave of Madrid wines, creating modern-style wines with the incorporation of foreign varieties. It is located about 40 km southeast of Madrid, in the Arganda subzone, the largest of the three that make up the D.O. Vinos de Madrid; a region with great potential, whose wines were already consumed in the Royal Court in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Specifically, Tagonius is situated on the banks of the Tajuña River (Tagonius in Latin), a tributary of the Tagus. Its vineyards stretch across various plots of highly mineral-rich soils in the river valley. In total, it manages 25 hectares of its own vineyards and an additional 50 hectares of controlled vineyards, where the tempranillo grape coexists with international varieties such as syrah, merlot, and cabernet sauvignon. It also cultivates the white varieties malvar and moscatel de grano menudo.

The grapes are processed in modern facilities built in the year 2000 on the same site as the old Justo del Pozo Olmeda winery, dating back to the 19th century. In its large barrel room, French and American oak from the best cooperages coexist.
