General Information

Silvia y Fernando Garnacha Peluda Rosado 2023 is part of a collection of wines made from Garnacha Peluda, one of Spain’s best native grapes. It’s a very unusual variety because its pulp is coloured instead of translucid like other varieties and it produces intense, very fruity wines with lots of personality.

Silvia y Fernando’s new range of wines started out in 2021. In 2018 the winery made cuttings from exceptional old vines to replant the new vineyards that now produce the grapes that go into making its younger and fresher wines. In 2023 they launched this rosé created from the youngest Garnacha Peluda vines. Only 1500 bottles were produced.

After being harvested by hand, the grapes were transferred to a refrigerated vat, where they were macerated for several hours. The must was then bled off to be fermented. Fifty percent of the must was fermented in stainless steel, at about 15ºC, and the rest in French oak barrels at about 18º C. After fermentation the wine was aged on the lees for approximately 2 months, both in barrels and in vats, before the final blend was made. It spent another 3 to 4 months in the winery before coming onto the market.

Vins Algars is a family-run winery located in Batea, in the D.O. Terra Alta. All its wines are organic and grown exclusively on its 32 hectares of vineyards, where the native varieties Garnacha Blanca, Garnacha Tinta and Garnacha Peluda are predominant. The plots are located in different parts of the municipality, at different altitudes and with various types of soil, such as stony, lime, clay and fine sand, among others.

The original Vins Algars winery was founded in 1940. Located in the village, it is built on different levels, making it possible to rely on gravity methods, and has underground cement tanks and very thick walls. In 2020 they built new facilities on the outskirts of the village, in the middle of the vineyard, which are technically more efficient and also more sustainable. The new facilities are equipped with a photovoltaic system that enables the firm to perform the whole winemaking and bottling process using solar energy. The wines are still aged in the old winery, as its constant temperature and humidity levels all year round provide better conditions for the barrels.

The D.O. Terra Alta (Tarragona) is located south of Catalonia between the river Ebro and the boundary with the region of Aragón. Its winegrowing tradition dates back to the Middle Ages and it has a rugged terrain, surrounded by various mountain ranges and crossed by small valleys. It’s characterised by high-altitude vineyards located on natural terraces with lime soils – conditions that infuse the wines with personality. The vines are not irrigated.

As for the climate, the area has cold winters and very hot summers, with scant rainfall. Two winds are dominant: the Cierzo and the ‘Garbi’. The former is hot and dry and comes from inland; the latter is wet and cool and comes from the sea. The combination of the two makes for conditions that are ideally suited to the ripening of the grapes.

Silvia y Fernando Garnacha Peluda Rosado 2023 (D.O. Terra Alta) is perfect with pasta, pizza, salads, appetisers and, in particular, vegetable pie or Japanese food such as salmon nigiri.
