Although the stars of German wine are the white wines, reds are gaining presence. We want to surprise you with Schwedhelm Zellertal Spätburgunder Trocken 2022, an excellent pinot noir - in German, spätburgunder - from the renowned Schwedhelm winery. Elegant and with abundant balsamic touches.
The kings of German wine production are the whites, but in recent times, thanks to warmer temperatures, their reds are also surprising. In fact, red grapes are harvested in a good part of the German wine regions. One of these areas is Pfalz (Palatinate). Here is born Schwedhelm Zellertal Spätburgunder Trocken 2022, a pinot noir aged for 18 months in oak.
Founded in 2006, Schwedhelm is one of the freshest and most groundbreaking projects in the Pfalz region, led by brothers Stephan and Georg Schwedhelm. Heirs to a long family winemaking tradition, they have managed to bring a breath of fresh air to the family’s wine production. They manage a family estate of 17 hectares in the northernmost part of Pfalz, in Zellertal, cultivating all their vineyards within a radius of less than 2 kilometers from the winery, which allows them to process all the grapes with great speed and efficiency.
Pfalz is the second-largest wine region in Germany, with over 23,000 hectares of vineyards stretching across the valleys west of the Rhine River, near the French border, amidst forests, orchards, and castle ruins. The area benefits from a temperate climate. In some years, it has exceeded 2,000 hours of sunlight annually, making it one of the sunniest, warmest, and driest wine regions in Germany, with an average temperature of 11º C.
The red Schwedhelm Zellertal Spätburgunder Trocken 2022 (Pfalz, Germany) pairs perfectly with dishes like Iberian pork tenderloin with mustard.
At sight, it presents a beautiful ripe cherry red color with a rim of the same tone, of medium depth. The nose is complex and elegant, with fruity aromas (plum, blackberry) in the foreground, accompanied by spicy notes (nutmeg, bay leaf), rich balsamic hints (licorice), and a touch of tobacco. On the palate, it is silky, with ripe tannins and acidity that provides freshness. Long finish with pleasant spicy memories as announced on the nose.
