General Information
Regueirón Godello 2021 is a fantastic white wine produced by the winery Virgen de Galir, a young winery founded in 2002, in a valley of the Galir River as it passes through the province of Ourense. Located in the southern area of the D.O. Valdeorras, the godello grapes cultivated there possess a Atlantic character defined by their freshness and good acidity.
In the production of this single-varietal godello, the care of the vine was prioritized, executed with a respectful philosophy based on sustainable agriculture. The harvesting of the grapes was carried out manually in 15 kg boxes, and at the winery, fermentation began in French oak barrels (50% new and 50% one-use), in the presence of their native yeasts. After aging for 12 months in those same barrels, the wine was transferred to a French oak foudre, where it remained for an additional 3 months to round out. The result is an aromatic, fresh white wine with pleasant acidity, a godello for aging with an Atlantic soul.
The origin of the godello grape dates back to the Roman colonization era. The good adaptation of this variety to the climate and soil of the area, especially on the river slopes, has made it the most planted and the flagship of the D.O. Valdeorras today. Tasting notes
It presents a bright and clean straw yellow color with greenish reflections.
On the nose, it is complex, with hints of scrubland and floral notes along with a pleasant mineral touch. It is intense and delicate.
Its entry on the palate is fresh, bold, with character and a long finish.
The winery
The origin of the winery Virgen del Galir (2002) is entirely family-based: it was founded by José Barros García who, together with his son David, has championed for years the magic of Valdeorras wines, both those made from godello and the -rarer- reds from mencía. The excellent work of the Barros family (in 2009 Robert Parker included one of their godellos in the top 100 best Spanish white wines under €25 and awarded it 90 points) caught the attention of the CVNE Group, which acquired the winery in 2017 with the aim of giving it the definitive push towards the pinnacle of Galician wines.
The Virgen del Galir winery is located in Éntoma, in O Barco de Valdeorras, in the eastern part of the province of Ourense. There it has 40 hectares of vineyards planted on terraces at over 600 m altitude, some of them old and inherited from previous generations of the Barros family.
