General Information

Ramón Bilbao Viñedos de Altura 2023 is one of the great commitments of Bodegas Ramón Bilbao, a winery with almost a century of history that has managed to reinvent itself without losing its essence. Internationally recognized for its innovative style and commitment to quality, the winery has found inspiration in high-altitude vineyards. Cultivating at over 700 meters above sea level allows for grapes with greater freshness, natural acidity, and a clearer expression of the terroir. This is the greatness of this wine, the result of a constant pursuit of the extraordinary.

The production of this red wine combines tradition and precision. The tempranillo and garnacha varieties are vinified separately to preserve their nuances. The malolactic fermentation is carried out in French oak vats on lees, and the aging process lasts for 15 months in French oak barrels selected for each variety. The result is a wine with structure, depth, and a personality that reflects the Atlantic character of Rioja Alta.

Ramón Bilbao Viñedos de Altura 2023 is much more than a wine: it is an opportunity to discover what happens when altitude becomes an ally of winemaking talent. Fresh, elegant, and with a story worth telling sip by sip, this red wine is a perfect choice for those who value wines with soul. Don’t miss out. It pairs beautifully with dishes such as grilled lamb chops or roasted suckling pig.

Tasting notes

Cherry red color with good depth.

Complex and expressive nose, with aromas of ripe red fruit alongside floral and red caramel notes, leading to a spicy and balsamic background; noble woods.

On the palate, it is flavorful, balanced, pleasant, aromatic, and luscious, enveloping and with fine integrated tannins. It has good persistence, reproducing the pleasant aromas perceived on the nose.

The winery

Bodegas Ramón Bilbao

Founded in 1924 by Ramón Bilbao Murga himself, since 1999 Bodegas Ramón Bilbao has been part of Grupo Zamora, which is owned by the Restoy Zamora family. From its extensive experience, its position as a pioneering company in the “art” of barrel aging stands out. In its most recent phase, its spectacular growth (from producing 600,000 bottles to 3,000,000 bottles today) and the modernization plan for its facilities and wine styles are noteworthy, largely due to the acquisition of productive vineyards and the planting of new vines in Rioja.

Located in Haro, the heart of Rioja wine, Ramón Bilbao is one of the wineries with the most tradition and prestige in the Rioja Alta. Its long history, supported by its excellent fieldwork and the application of modern winemaking, places it among the benchmark brands of Rioja vineyards. Its winemaker, Rodolfo Bastida, played an active role in the renewal carried out in the 1990s to give Rioja wines greater fruit presence and concentration. Ramón Bilbao owns 180 hectares of its own vineyards and oversees an additional 818 hectares from regional growers.

In 2010, Ramón Bilbao expanded its reach to the D.O. Rueda to produce interesting Verdejos. With the 2016 vintage, they inaugurated their own winery in this region, the homeland of Verdejo, where they already have 60 hectares of vineyards.
