Carlos San Pedro's dream was always to own a vineyard with limited production to create quality wines that represented the beautiful landscape of Laguardia and Rioja Alavesa. He achieved it in 2002 when he founded Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza. This is where the wine we now present to you is born, Pujanza Valdepoleo Selección Especial 2019, an exclusive version of one of the winery's most emblematic reds, also from a vintage rated as Excellent in the D.O.Ca. Rioja.
This is a single-varietal tempranillo from the Valdepoleo estate, which surrounds the winery. This estate is divided into 7 plots according to their exposure, orientation, and sunlight, and the wine is made from a selection of selections, meaning from the best batches that make up Pujanza Valdepoleo, the house's most emblematic red. A 14-month aging in French oak barrels rounds off a wine that stands out for its elegance, freshness, and personality.
And indeed, Carlos San Pedro knows well what he's doing. He comes from a family of winemakers from Laguardia and owns over 17 hectares of vineyards with an average age of nearly 50 years, cultivated on the slopes of the Sierra de Cantabria at an average altitude of 630 meters above sea level. This is where wines like the legendary Pujanza Norte and Pujanza Cisma are born (adored by critics, especially by Robert Parker) and this sensational Pujanza Valdepoleo Selección Especial 2019. Enjoy it with hearty meat dishes like roast lamb or venison stew.
In the glass, it displays a beautiful ripe cherry red color with a ruby rim, of high intensity.
On the nose, it is very elegant, perfumed, and intense: first, it highlights aromas of black fruits in confiture (blueberry, blackberry) along with abundant spicy notes (pepper), also touches of licorice and pleasant mineral undertones.
On the palate, it exhibits excellent noble and smooth tannins, resulting in an enveloping, juicy, deep wine with a magnificent structure and well-balanced acidity. Persistent and seductive finish.
Behind the name Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza lies one of the most outstanding winemaking projects in the Rioja region, praised by leading national and international critics. Carlos San Pedro leads the operations and winemaking, a man who has managed to combine the viticultural heritage of his ancestors with a modern oenological vision, where the most important thing is to serve the magnificent vineyard he manages in Laguardia.
