In the 'Golden Mile' of Ribera del Duero, the new harvest of Pruno Red Edition 2023 originates from the meticulous work of Finca Villacreces, crafted with Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and a crianza that offers balance, intensity, and elegance. An exclusive red for Vinoselección that exudes character, designed to leave a mark.

Pruno Red Edition 2023 is a vineyard-character red wine, straightforward and highly recognisable, produced in the D.O. Ribera del Duero. Its profile revolves around a Tempranillo, accompanied by small contributions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, a combination that provides balance and a very well-defined personality.

It comes from the Finca Villacreces vineyard, in Quintanilla de Onésimo, within the 'golden mile'. These plots are carefully tended, hand-harvested, and precisely selected, before undergoing maturation in barrel that polishes the overall without stripping away freshness or identity. Everything here seems designed to ensure the wine retains that serious tone but with an approachability that is easy to enjoy.

Finca Villacreces, acquired by Artevino Family Wineries in 2004, has managed to grow without losing its essence. The winery, located alongside legendary vineyards in the region, has reclaimed the value of its estate to become a very solid reference in Ribera del Duero. Their approach is focused on the vineyard, on detail, and on a clear idea: wines with a sense of origin and a distinctive style.

Consumption features

Pairing

Pruno Red Edition 2023 accurately expresses the character of Finca Villacreces in the Ribera del Duero and pairs best with hearty, flavourful dishes. It complements a grilled beef steak, veal cheeks, roast lamb, or suckling pig, but also works well with a mushroom casserole, glazed pork ribs, or stuffed peppers with meat. Its notes of ripe fruit and fine wood also accompany aged cheeses and Iberian cured meats.

Making process

Winemaking

What does precise winemaking achieve when aiming to preserve the vineyard's character while also contributing structure and finesse? In Pruno Red Edition 2023, the grapes undergo a double selection in the winery — first of the bunches and then of the berries — followed by a destemming without crushing that respects the integrity of the fruit. The alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, with pissage pistons that promote gentle extraction, while the malolactic fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks and oak casks. The composition, dominated by Tempranillo and complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon, defines a precise and varietally pure vinification.

Aging

Intense cherry red with a violet rim. This red wine from Finca Villacreces has been aged for 10 months in oak, combining fine-grain French oak of second and third year and American oak. No specific period of bottle ageing is detailed prior to market release.

Vineyard

Description

Pruno Red Edition 2023 originates from Tempranillo grapes, with contributions from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Climate

Pruno Red Edition 2023 originates from a vineyard in the Golden Mile of Ribera del Duero, where the continental climate defines the style of the vineyard. The plots at Finca Villacreces, in Quintanilla de Onésimo, benefit from a high altitude and significant temperature variations between day and night during ripening. This temperature range helps to preserve freshness and to concentrate the fruit.

Viticulture

While many reds from Ribera del Duero rely on conventional viticulture, Pruno Red Edition 2023 is born from a much more precise approach in the plots of Finca Villacreces. The winery tends the vineyard with manual harvests and a meticulous selection of the grapes, aiming to ensure that only fruit at the optimal ripeness reaches the winery.

In this regard, the vineyard is managed under integrated viticulture principles and with eco-friendly soil cultivation techniques, through cover cropping, a practice that helps maintain the natural balance of the land and promotes more expressive grapes. The result is a more authentic origin of the landscape of the estate and a style of wine that combines elegance, concentration, and freshness.

The winery

Finca Villacreces

In 2004, the Artevino group acquired Finca Villacreces, a spectacular estate with centuries of history in a privileged location, within the area known as the ‘Golden Mile’ of Ribera del Duero, with vineyards adjacent to the legendary Vega Sicilia. After the renovation of the existing winery (founded in 1994) and meticulous work on vineyard recovery, Finca Villacreces embarked on a successful journey, becoming one of the most outstanding wineries in Ribera del Duero.

Finca Villacreces boasts 64 hectares of vineyards divided into 15 different plots (based on soil, altitude, exposure, microclimate, vine training systems…), and each variety is cultivated in the site where it best adapts. The main grape is tempranillo, complemented by other French-origin varieties such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot.

Finca Villacreces is part of the Artevino group and produces the brands Pruno (the best Spanish wine under $20 according to guru Robert Parker), Finca Villacreces, and the top-tier Nebro.
