General Information

19 years ago, the giant Protos made the leap from Ribera del Duero to Rueda, and since then, the joys this winery has brought to wine lovers of this designation of origin have been countless. There, they began producing, with great success, one of the most renowned verdejos in Spain, Protos Verdejo. However, the restless mind of this winery continued searching for other varieties that would fit well with the standards of the D.O. Rueda, while giving them their most personal touch. They then sought out interesting vineyards with the aim of crafting an atypical sauvignon blanc, avoiding the tropical parameters that prevailed and the use of commercial fermentation yeasts. They were determined to create a sauvignon blanc from Rueda that could hail from anywhere, and they found the two ideal plots from which this fantastic white wine would be born.

Protos Sauvignon Blanc 2024 is the latest and magnificent vintage of a single-varietal wine made from a coupage of the fruits of a vineyard over 30 years old, planted on gravelly and clay soils and located in the vineyard of La Virgen; and those from a second vineyard, Los Rosales, cultivated for 10 years on sandy soils. It is the result of a winter and spring that were warmer and wetter than average, and a warm, dry summer, with the harvest taking place in early September during cool nighttime temperatures of between 12 and 14ºC, ensuring the freshness of the berries. This was followed by maceration for 4 hours at 10ºC, pressing in an inert atmosphere, static settling at the same temperature, and controlled fermentation at 14.5ºC, using yeasts selected by the winery from its own vineyard. Finally, the wine is perfected with aging on its lees in stainless steel tanks for about 2 months.

Protos Sauvignon Blanc 2024 will be the perfect companion to all kinds of fish, seafood, and

Tasting notes

Pale yellow color with steely hues indicating youth. Very clean and bright.

Medium intensity on the nose, highlighting herbal, citrus, and a tropical fruit characteristic of the variety.

On the palate, it is a dry wine with a very pleasant entry and a freshness that invites drinking, due to the wine's natural acidity. A wine with good volume and long persistence, largely achieved through aging on lees.

The winery

Bodegas Protos

Protos was (except for Vega Sicilia) the first winery of Ribera del Duero: founded in 1927 as a cooperative after the union of 11 winegrowers from the area, and one of the wineries that promoted the creation of the Denomination of Origin in Ribera del Duero (1982). Today, it is one of the most important wineries in Spain, and its wines are sold in 100 countries across five continents.

Located in Peñafiel, where the old and new wineries are connected by an underground tunnel. The old winery, exclusively dedicated to aging, has 2 kilometers of underground galleries carved into the mountain on which the castle stands, where the wines are aged under optimal natural conditions. The new facilities, with a spectacular design by the prestigious architect Richard Rogers, place Protos at the forefront of the wine and wine tourism scene. In fact, it is the most visited winery in the D.O. Ribera del Duero and was the first nationally to achieve the "mark of excellence" certificate by the prestigious international body Superbrands. Additionally, in 2013, Protos was recognized as "Winery of the Year" by Wine & Spirit magazine, and in 2022, it was named one of the 50 most admired wineries in the world by the prestigious international organization Drinks International.

Bodegas Protos owns 150 hectares of its own vineyards and also sources from its associates to craft its elegant wines. This carefully managed but extensive viticulture potential allows the allocation of each grape bunch to a specific type of wine. Another cornerstone of its philosophy is the constant renewal of its barrel stock (with a maximum of 4 years). Since 2006, Protos has also been present in the D.O. Rueda, where it produces Verdejo whites following the same high-quality standards. More recently, in 2019, it announced its entry into the D.O. Cigales.
