The red wine Procura 2015 arises from the combination of two unique vineyards discovered by the Galician winemaker and enologist Susana Esteban in Alentejo, with very different characteristics. The first hosts alicante bouschet (garnacha tintorera) vines, with very low yields, planted on schist soils near Évora; the second, in a cooler part of the region, treasures mixed vineyards planted with traditional local varieties, with extremely low yields, which provide the wines with unmatched freshness and complexity.
The grape clusters were hand-harvested and vinified in small stainless steel vats, and after blending, the resulting wine was aged for 16 months in new and second-year French oak barrels. This intelligent use of wood, along with the excellent quality of the 2015 vintage, offers us a balanced wine with round tannins that give it body and structure.
After years working as a wine consultant, in 2009 Susana Esteban decided to move to Alentejo to start her most personal project. Wines with their own personality that reflect the maximum varietal expression and the terroir. In 2011, her work was rewarded when she was named Winemaker of the Year in Portugal by Revista de Vinhos, becoming the first woman and, at the same time, the first foreigner to achieve this recognition.
Susana Esteban Procura 2015 (D.O. Alentejo) is the perfect pairing to accompany grilled red meats, small game with mushrooms, or cured cheeses.
Deep garnet color with ruby highlights.
On the nose, it appears shy at first, but as it opens up, it reveals concentrated aromas of black fruits and spices such as pepper, licorice, and clove.
On the palate, it is broad and voluminous, with juicy and rounded tannins that provide perfect balance. It has an intense finish with notes of blackcurrant, coffee, and a hint of eucalyptus.
Born in Tuy (Pontevedra), Susana Esteban holds a degree in Chemistry from the University of Santiago de Compostela and a master's degree in Enology from the University of La Rioja. She began working as an enologist at Quinta do Côtto (Douro) in 1999, and in 2002 she moved to Quinta do Crasto, where she worked as an enologist until 2007.
A consultant for various wineries in Alentejo (Portugal), at the end of 2009 Susana decided to embark on her personal project, with the determination to produce wines full of character and with a unique style slightly removed from the traditional techniques of Alentejo. In 2011, she discovered two small vineyards that laid the foundation for her two wines: In Portalegre, she found an old mixed plantation of several different varieties, with very low yields, providing an astonishing complexity and freshness. By blending these two vineyards, she managed to create "Procura."
Susana Esteban has joined forces with her good friend and fellow enologist Sandra Tavares to craft wines together. The first wine that emerged from the Esteban&Tavares partnership was the red Crochet, and more recently, in 2014, they launched Tricot, made in Susana Esteban's winery in Alentejo.
