General Information

Príncipe de Viana 1423 Reserva 2018 (vegan wine) is the result of blending tempranillo and garnacha grapes, sourced from 25-year-old trellised vineyards. The name of the wine refers to the year (1423) when Carlos de Viana, heir to the Navarre and Aragon crowns, received the title of Príncipe de Viana. The garnacha is grown in sandy loam soils with pebbles, which provide ripeness and fresh red fruit. The tempranillo comes from clay loam soils with limestone marl and good drainage, contributing ripe red and black fruit.

Manual and nighttime harvest to prevent oxidation, with a process of berry semi-freezing, selection tables, and cold maceration at 4º C for 48 hours. Alcoholic fermentation with selected native yeasts. Then, malolactic fermentation was carried out in barrels, followed by 15 months of aging in French oak barrels, and finally, 24 months of bottle aging.

Príncipe de Viana is one of the most important wineries in the D.O. Navarra, despite not having a very long history (it was founded in 1983). It owns over 400 hectares of vineyards and controls another 400, making it a major viticultural powerhouse. With these grapes, it produces wines in two denominations: D.O. Navarra and D.O.Ca. Rioja, where the Príncipe de Viana group owns the Rioja Vega winery.

Príncipe de Viana 1423 Reserva 2018 (D.O. Navarra) is ideal to pair with migas a la pastora, roasted suckling pig, and aged cheeses.

Tasting notes

Cherry red color with ruby tones, bright and with good depth. The nose is intense and complex, highlighting aromas of red and black fruit along with floral notes and a pleasant spicy background; fine woods. On the palate, it is flavorful, fresh, and well-structured with good balance. The passage is smooth, with noble and integrated tannins. Good length on the finish.

The winery

Bodegas Príncipe de Viana

Founded in 1983, Bodegas Príncipe de Viana is the great winemaking powerhouse of Navarra, a Denomination of Origin that has earned respect not only for its rosés but also for its aged reds and some high-quality whites. The range of wines from the Murchante winery (and since 2004 also from Cadreita), led by its 1423 Reserva, is a good example of this: it includes more than a dozen references made with a variety of grapes ranging from Garnacha and Syrah to Tempranillo, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, or Sauvignon Blanc.

The numbers of Príncipe de Viana are impressive, and rightly so. Few wineries are capable of producing ten million bottles a year to be enjoyed in more than twenty countries. This success is rooted in an absolute respect for the land of origin and the grape varieties cultivated there, not to mention the interest in experimenting with varieties that may not have as much tradition in the area.
The brand also owns two other wineries in Rioja (Rioja Vega) and Navarra (Finca Albret).
