Pezas da Portela Godello 2022 is the excellent result of a blend of eleven small plots (pezas) of godello grapes from a clone originating in Pedrouzos. This vineyard was the first in the world to be planted with this variety by José Ramón Gayoso, great-grandfather of the current owners of Bodegas Valdesil, an emblematic Galician winery.
The production of Pezas da Portela Godello 2022 included fermentation and aging for 6 months in old French oak barrels with its lees, and an additional 12 months aging in stainless steel tanks. Previous vintages of this splendid Galician white from the D.O. Valdeorras won silver medals in 2011 and 2013 at the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards.
Of a striking golden yellow color.
Nose dominated by mineral, citrus, and white flower aromas.
On the palate, it is tasty, fatty, and with good acidity that provides freshness.
Valdesil has been one of the key players in the recovery of Godello in Galicia, an excellent native variety capable of competing in quality with any white grape in our country. The winery, located in Córgomo, in the municipality of Vilamartín de Valdeorras in Ourense, has uniquely harnessed the slate slopes of the region, which are responsible for the unmistakable minerality of the wines from this area.
Valdesil is owned by the third generation of the Prada Gayoso family, a family with a long winemaking tradition that, just over a decade ago, decided to recover all the "pezas" (plots) of Godello that had belonged to them in the past. In just a few years and through hard work, the winery has established itself as one of the most important wine producers in the D.O. Valdeorras, with its influence extending to Bierzo with remarkable success. The responsibility for the winery's production lies with the Prada Gayoso family, supported externally by Cristina Mantilla in oenology and José Ramón Lissarrague in viticulture.
