General Information

Pesquera MXI 2019 is made, like all the wines from this winery, exclusively with tempranillo grapes, harvested at 900 meters altitude on the Monte Alto de Pesquera. It belongs to a vintage that has been rated as Excellent in the D.O. and has been aged for 14 months in American oak barrels. It is destined to mark a before and after in the history of this legendary winery.

Tinto Pesquera is one of the most international Spanish wines, considered a legend in the D.O. Ribera del Duero, and the family that produces it, Fernández Rivera, has become an institution in this region. When it was launched on the market, it drew significant attention: it was different from the rest and broke away from the "Rioja model" that prevailed at the time.

Its success was solidified when the American critic Robert Parker compared the 1982 vintage of Tinto Pesquera to the mythical Bordeaux Pétrus and awarded it 98 points, something unthinkable at that time for almost any Spanish wine. Since then, all the wines from this winery have been successful wherever they go.

Pesquera MXI 2019 (D.O. Ribera del Duero) is ideal to accompany rice dishes with small game, carpaccio, grilled meat, and lamb chops cooked over vine shoots.

Tasting notes

Cherry red color with a violet hue, with purple reflections indicating youth.

It presents a medium-high aromatic intensity, with hints of red fruits such as raspberry and redcurrant.

On the palate, it is fresh with a silky and very sweet passage, notable acidity, and marked tannins that provide a long persistence on the palate. Final notes of vanilla characteristic of its aging in American oak.

The winery

Tinto Pesquera

Behind this iconic winery is the Fernández Rivera family, originally from Pesquera de Duero (Valladolid). In 1975, this lineage produced the first vintage of Tinto Pesquera in a small 16th-century stone winepress: a revolutionary wine whose name refers to the town where the winery is located and the birthplace of its founders. Tinto Pesquera is considered the first luxury Ribera del Duero wine, at a time when - with the exception of Vega Sicilia - producers were focused on making claretes and very alcoholic reds of limited quality.

The success of Tinto Pesquera was decisive in the recognition of the D.O. Ribera del Duero in 1982, as well as its international projection. The winery gained worldwide fame when the guru Robert Parker awarded 98 points to Tinto Pesquera 1982, comparing it to Pétrus, one of the world's best wines. Tinto Pesquera opened new paths for winemaking with the tempranillo grape, driving a significant qualitative leap. Today, it remains a benchmark brand and the most beloved winery of the Familia Fernández Rivera group.
