Other Denominaciones de Origen Collection – September Wine Month 2024
Spanish wine is a world leader in terms of quality, as evidenced by the high scores our wines are increasingly awarded by all the specialist magazines and guides. This collection is designed for you to enjoy the diversity of wine-producing Spain through three very interesting reds from regions other than the usual Rioja and Ribera del Duero which are rising to the fore thanks to their good work with native grape varieties.
The first wine is a Garnacha from the Sierra de Gredos, an area that’s been in the international limelight for years; the second is a Crianza from Cigales made from the Tempranillo variety; and the third and last comes from one of the most charming regions in Spain, El Bierzo, where the Mencía variety is king.

General information
2 bottles of Jiménez-Landi Garnacha 2022. B. Jiménez-Landi. D.O. Méntrida.
The redesigned Garnachas from the Sierra de Gredos are among the most interesting wines on today’s scene. Jiménez Landi was one of the first wineries to restore Garnacha to its lost splendour in this area in central Spain. This firm, with a hugely prestigious international reputation, works with microplots of old vines using organic and biodynamic practices. The exclusive red Jiménez-Landi Garnacha 2022 was carefully aged in different types of French vessels. It’s fresh and supple, with an aromatic mid-palate, fine tannins and a long finish.
2 bottles of Hiriart Crianza 2020. Bodega Hiriart. D.O. Cigales.
Cigales is well known as one of the meccas of rosé wines, but it also produces very interesting reds from Tempranillo grapes that look set to rise to fame. We adore Hiriart Crianza 2020. Made from selected grapes from the winery’s oldest vineyards, it was aged for 12 to 14 months in French, American and Central European barrels and matured to perfection for 6 to 12 months in the bottle. A smooth, fleshy red with ripe tannins that displays aromas of black fruit and notes from ageing in excellent-quality barrels.
2 bottles of Versos de Valtuille Mencía 2021. Estévez Bodegas y Viñedos. D.O. Bierzo.
The D.O. Bierzo is currently in good shape. This area of León has got everything: history, a unique terroir consisting chiefly of smallholdings, vertical vineyards and slate soils, as well as a superb native variety, Mencía. Versos de Valtuille Mencía 2021 (a score of 92 Parker points) comes from a combination of old Mencía vines with an average age of 75 years. All the vines are located in Valtuille de Abajo, one of the most coveted areas of the D.O. Both alcoholic fermentation and ageing (8 months) took place in 7,500-litre French oak foudres.
