Syrah is a variety with a long ripening cycle that requires lots of sunlight and high temperatures, which is why it’s so well acclimatised to the D.O. Jumilla. One of the cutting-edge wineries in the Denominación makes Origen de Luzón Syrah 2020, a single-varietal red grown on a single plot and matured to perfection in barrels for 6 months.

General Information

If there’s one area that has managed to get everyone talking about it, it has to be Jumilla. The star native grape variety in this region is Monastrell, but another Mediterranean grape of French origin has adapted marvellously to it: Syrah. Origen de Luzón Syrah 2020 is a single-varietal made from grapes grown on El Pocico, a 20-year old vineyard located at an altitude of 700 m with sandy-loam soil that produces grapes with intense flavours and high concentration. They were harvested by hand.

The grapes were sorted on arriving at the winery. Alcoholic fermentation took place for 8 to 10 days at a temperature of no more than 26ºC in contact with the grape skins. The resulting wine spent 6 months in barrels to infuse it with subtle hints of oak and cocoa.

With more than a century of experience, Bodegas Luzón, together with the Gil family and Casa de la Ermita, has been the driving force behind the modernisation of the D.O. Jumilla and shares responsibility for having made Monastrell one of the most important grape varieties in Spain. It's a cutting-edge winery that produces wines of the highest quality. An avant-garde winery that is strongly committed to wine tourism and uses 1,200 hectares of vineyards.

Origen de Luzón Syrah 2020 (D.O. Jumilla) is ideal with stewed verdina beans with monkfish.

Creators' opinion

The winery

Bodegas Luzón

With over a century of history, the recent trajectory of Luzón places it as one of the revolutionary wineries in the D.O. Jumilla and the entire southeastern region of Spain. It is one of the most important wineries in the area along with Bodegas y Viñedos Casa de la Ermita and Juan Gil Bodegas Familiares, sharing the responsibility of elevating the monastrell variety as one of the flagship grapes of the national wine scene.

The origins of Bodegas Luzón stem from the successive union of winegrowers and producers in the Jumilla region since 1916, a cooperative effort that expanded, modernized, and became established as a winery until 2005, when Grupo Fuertes acquired the majority share of the company and undertook significant investments to equip Bodegas Luzón with the most advanced technology in favor of a well-cared-for and closely monitored vineyard. Today, Luzón is a cutting-edge winery strongly committed to wine tourism. It manages a total of 1,200 hectares of vineyards, of which 412 are owned.
