Ontañón Crianza 2021 is the essential wine made by Bodegas Ontañón and a reflection of the varied climates and soils of Rioja. The Pérez Cuevas family produced this red wine from a mosaic of Tempranillo and Garnacha vineyards located in the easternmost area of the D.O.Ca. Rioja, and rounded off its careful vinification with ageing in
French and American oak barrels to lend it depth and great aromatic complexity.

General Information

Ontañón Crianza is the winery’s icon to which it dedicates the utmost care, vintage after vintage, in order to achieve a perfect balance between fruit, freshness and ageing. Ontañón Crianza 2021 comes from its own mosaic of vineyards located in the Sierra de Yerga, in the Rioja Oriental, where the altitude (more than 650 metres), the clay-limestone soils and the Mediterranean climate lend the grapes character and freshness. The firm’s grape growing methods are increasingly rational and sustainable, with utmost respect for the environment and the vines, resulting in exceptional quality berries.

The wine is made from a blend of high-altitude Tempranillo and old Garnacha, vinified separately to preserve their identity. After five days of cold maceration to extract their colour and aromas, the grapes were fermented at a controlled temperature, with frequent pumping-over and délestage (rack and return) to enhance the wine’s structure and complexity. Only the free-run juice was used and, after fermentation, the resulting wine was aged for 12 months in American and French oak barrels, refining its tannins and gaining in elegance.

Bodegas Ontañón is a family firm that’s been making wine for more than four generations. It was founded by Gabriel Pérez, whose children Raquel, Rubén (the firm's winemaker), Leticia and María are carrying on his legacy, combining tradition, innovation and their artistic vision. The family makes quality wines grown on their vineyards in
in Rioja, Rueda and Ribera del Duero, following a philosophy based on the pursuit of excellence and utmost respect for the terroir and native grape varieties.

Harmonious, flavoursome and balanced, Ontañón Crianza 2021 is a perfect ambassador of Rioja Oriental. Enjoy it with red meat, vegetable stews, game, Ibérico ham or cured cheeses.

Creators' opinion

The winery

Bodegas Ontañón
The fourth generation of the Pérez Cuevas family continues, day by day, the tradition of viticulture in Rioja Oriental. Gabriel Pérez inherited the vineyards from the lands of his ancestors on the outskirts of the town of Quel, on the high slopes of the Sierra de Yerga. When Gabriel took the reins in the early 70s, he began producing wine from those vineyards instead of selling his grapes as had been done until then. He was determined to create a wine that embodied the region of Quel, where his family had deep roots and where he knew wines of great quality were born. Since then, Ontañón has been committed to the vineyards of these unique terroirs. Over the years, Bodegas Ontañón has expanded its expertise to iconic denominations such as Ribera del Duero, Rueda, and Navarra.
