Our October Monthly Selection is a one-off opportunity to try two consecutive vintages of a legendary Reserva and Gran Reserva from Rioja made by the famous Bodegas Olarra, one of them – 2019 – rated Excellent.
Olarra Clásico Reserva 2019 and Olarra Clásico Gran Reserva 2018 are an unbeatable duo. Two Riojas of the kind that leave a mark, produced by one of the most iconic wineries in the region, known as the ‘Cathedral of Rioja’ for its impressive facilities. They were designed by one of the fashionable winemakers: Javier Martínez de Salinas, the only Spaniard to be nominated for International Wine Challenge’s prestigious international competition 'IWC Red Winemaker of the Year 2024' – a privilege that wasn’t new to him as he had been nominated in the same category in 2021.

Olarra Clásico Reserva 2019 is a blend dominated by Tempranillo, a Rioja that combines both past and present in a single concept: it’s modern, well-structured and potent with an amazing balance between fruit and wood. Vinoselección’s wine experts were involved in the blend.
It was designed in the style of classic wines of the late 1900s: short vatting times to preserve the original freshness and varietal properties. It was then matured to perfection for 19 months in Missouri oak barrels, with periodic racking. After being lightly clarified with egg whites, it was bottled and further aged.

Olarra Clásico Reserva 2018 was one of the most special wines we offered our members in 2023. That year both Vinoselección and Bodegas Olarra celebrated our 50th anniversaries. The wine soon sold out because the specialised Wine Searcher portal included it in its top ten best-value wines for around €10. The result of that huge success and our fantastic relationship with the winery is this Monthly Selection which is even better that that special offer as it offers a panorama of the most sought-after Olarras: a Reserva and a Gran Reserva
