Sierra de Gredos and old Garnachas, a wonderful duo
Las Moradas de San Martín Senda 2022, an organic wine made from old Garnacha vines and winner of the Silver Medal at Decanter, the world's most prestigious wine competition, comes from the Sierra de Gredos, one of Spain's most fascinating and fashionable wine regions, attracting international attention.
In recent years, the Sierra de Gredos has become the mecca of quality in Madrid's wine scene. This mountainous area is home to old Garnacha vines rediscovered and is the source of wines praised internationally. Las Moradas de San Martín was one of the pioneering firms in this resurgence. Las Moradas de San Martín Senda 2022 comes from grapes harvested from several plots of old bush-trained vines grown with ecological viticulture. In addition, it has undergone 10 months of ageing in 500‑litre French oak barrels.
A romantic project: that is how we can define Las Moradas de San Martín, a small winery founded in 1999 with the idea of recovering old Garnacha vines in the mountains of the Sierra de Gredos. A region with a strong Garnacha tradition that had almost forgotten these vineyards. Here, Las Moradas de San Martín Senda 2022 is being crafted, a red that reflects the winery's singular terroir and that stems from a vintage that stood out for its excellent quality and good yield.
To make this wine, old dry-farmed plots were selected, cultivated in an ecological manner, which grow on granitic soils and yield grapes with good acidity and ripeness. The vineyards currently carry ecological certification both in the vineyard and in the winery.
Consumption features
Pairing

Winemaking
The fermentation was carried out with gentle pumping-over and in its own yeasts. The ageing was carried out for ten months in 500-litre French oak barrels for different uses, depending on each plot. The restrained use of oak makes SENDA the freshest of our wines. The assemblage took place in a tank. Bottled unfiltered and unstabilised, or unclarified.
Vineyard
Description
Plots on mountain slopes at almost 900 m above sea level, and dry-farmed, aged between 40 and 85 years, farmed with organic viticulture and biodynamics. These Garnacha with bush training sit on granitic soils of a sandy-loam texture (90-93% sand), which confer their character, producing very fresh grapes, in turgent bunches and slightly larger berries, with a fruity and floral profile. Plots: “Panaderos”, “Boquerón”, “Los Corzos”, “La Coja” and “Poniente”.
Tasting notes
Nose
Very fresh, vibrant and aromatic. Garnacha, very varietal, with a very intense nose of floral aromas, plum, wild berries and scrubland (balsamic), as well as graphite and with a mineral background.
Mouth
On the palate it is long, silky and elegant, with a very frank finish. A wine that faithfully represents the spirit of the garnacha-terruño of LAS MORADAS.
“A romantic project.” This is how we can define Las Moradas de San Martín, a small winery founded in 1999 with the idea of producing high-quality wine using Spain’s quintessential native grape, garnacha, which at the time was unjustly forgotten. To achieve this, the chosen path was the recovery of old vineyards in a historically renowned winemaking area: San Martín de Valdeiglesias, in the Sierra de Gredos, southwest of Madrid. Thus, Las Moradas became a pioneer in a movement that attracted prominent figures in Spanish wine and wineries, bringing the garnachas of Gredos to the attention and acclaim of the international stage.
After meticulous soil studies and micro-vinifications, the winery decided to establish itself in the Pago de los Castillejos, at 900 m altitude, where they carefully nurture and rescue century-old garnacha vines. These vines, growing in very poor granite soils, yield limited quantities of concentrated, high-quality berries. Organic viticulture and non-interventionist winemaking are other key principles of the winery.
Thanks to the altitude, the vineyards benefit from temperature variations and slower, better ripening processes. The estate is home to century-old garnacha vineyards alongside new plantings selected to complement quality. The winery owns 21 hectares of vineyards: 19 hectares of garnacha – with century-old vines – and 2 hectares of albillo real. Las Moradas de San Martín produces wines with great personality that have garnered international critical acclaim, including from the guru Robert Parker. Their annual production barely reaches 50,000 bottles.
