General Information

We’re offering you an exclusive red wine made by and for us in conjunction with one of the most important wineries in Spain and a leading name in the D.O. Ribera del Duero: Matarromera. Melior de Matarromera 12 Meses 2019 is a Tempranillo that comes from a spectacular vineyard located in one of the best areas of the D.O. Ribera del Duero: in Olivares and Valbuena de Duero. In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the Cistercian monks of the Monastery of Santa María de Valbuena in San Bernardo were already cultivating vines that were the origin of grape growing in Spain.

The result is a modern wine, aged for 12 months in oak barrels and with all the character of the Tempranillo from the Ribera del Duero region. It’s an example of how skilful oak ageing can respect the character of the variety and give it the support it needs to develop nicely in the bottle.

Back in 1988  Carlos Moro, a renowned entrepreneur of Castilla y León from a winemaking family, laid the foundations of the prestigious Matarromera winery in one of the most desirable riverside villages for winemaking: Valbuena de Duero, which is home to some of the best Tinto Fino or Tempranillo in the world.

Matarromera currently has more than 160 hectares of vineyards rooted in limestone soils, located beside the winery and in the nearby areas of Valbuena and Olivares de Duero. Sixty of them, planted in 1997, used to produce the winery's more affordable wines. But they have come of age and in an Excellent year like 2019 produce grapes with increasingly complex and layered flavours.

We’ve chosen the best grapes from these vineyards to make Melior de Matarromera 12 Meses 2019, an exclusive red wine that will amaze you. You can enjoy it now or wait for it to develop magnificently in the bottle. It’s ideal with stewed beef with apples and prunes or soupy rice dish with meat and mushrooms.

The winery

Bodega Matarromera

Following the winemaking tradition of his Castilian ancestors, Carlos Moro founded the Matarromera winery in Valbuena de Duero (Valladolid) in 1988 with a clear objective: to create quality wines using the most advanced technology while respecting traditional winemaking methods. The main challenge undertaken by Carlos Moro was his commitment to new barrels for aging his wines, an initiative that was novel at the time in Ribera del Duero. Another key to Matarromera's success is its excellent vineyards, located in a legendary area of the D.O. Ribera del Duero: Valbuena de Duero.

Matarromera was the first winery of Carlos Moro and the seed of one of the most important wine groups in this country: Bodegas Familiares Matarromera. The first red wine produced by the winery—an ancestor of the brand we now know as Melior—achieved the title of "Best Wine in the World" at the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) competition held in Turkey in 1995. Currently, Bodega Matarromera has 150 hectares of its own vineyards and controls an additional 160 hectares.
