General Information
Matarromera’s wines have defined the style of one of Spain’s most highly appreciated wine regions, Ribera del Duero. Matarromera Reserva 2017 is a single-varietal made from Tempranillo grapes from vines more than 25 years old whose lime soils infuse them with a high concentration of colour and polyphenols, characteristics that make for a long life. This Reserva, which was aged for 14 months in barrels and spent a further 22 months in the bottle, is a good example.
The grapes came from two vineyards that lie at an altitude of more than 750 metres in Olivares de Duero (Valladolid): Las Celadillas, very close to the winery and planted with clones of traditional local Tempranillo vines; and Las Solanas, Matarromera’s legendary estate. The 2017 harvest was moderate and was characterised by magnificently ripe aromas, great freshness and the excellent quality of the grapes.
Founded by Carlos Moro in 1988 in Valbuena de Duero, in what is known as the ‘golden mile’ of Ribera del Duero, Bodega Matarromera was an almost instant success. Its first vintage even won the Best Wine in the World award at the international competition staged by wine organisation OIV in Turkey in 1995. Today its name is internationally famous and it’s one of the most important winemaking groups, also present in Toro, Cigales, Rueda and Rioja.
Matarromera Reserva 2017 (D.O. Ribera del Duero) is ideal with barbecues, spicy dishes, roast lamb, oxtail and oily fish.

The winery
Following the winemaking tradition of his Castilian ancestors, Carlos Moro founded the Matarromera winery in Valbuena de Duero (Valladolid) in 1988 with a clear objective: to create quality wines using the most advanced technology while respecting traditional winemaking methods. The main challenge undertaken by Carlos Moro was his commitment to new barrels for aging his wines, an initiative that was novel at the time in Ribera del Duero. Another key to Matarromera's success is its excellent vineyards, located in a legendary area of the D.O. Ribera del Duero: Valbuena de Duero.
Matarromera was the first winery of Carlos Moro and the seed of one of the most important wine groups in this country: Bodegas Familiares Matarromera. The first red wine produced by the winery—an ancestor of the brand we now know as Melior—achieved the title of "Best Wine in the World" at the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) competition held in Turkey in 1995. Currently, Bodega Matarromera has 150 hectares of its own vineyards and controls an additional 160 hectares.
