Matarromera has become one of the benchmark wineries of Spanish wine and a success model in Ribera del Duero. Supporting its success are privileged Tempranillo vineyards. Its Matarromera Gran Reserva 2016 is rated 92 points by Tim Atkin MW.
Matarromera Gran Reserva 2016 is made from Tempranillo grapes from the San Román and Las Celadillas estates, iconic vineyards of Matarromera, located very close to the winery in Valbuena de Duero. These vineyards are on a steep calcareous slope overlooking the Duero River, covering just over 6 hectares, with a southern orientation and limited production of 4,000 kg/ha. The fermentation took place over 10-14 days in stainless steel tanks at 28º C. It was then aged for 24 months in predominantly French oak barrels of the highest quality, followed by an additional 36 months in bottle, which contributed to its magnificent roundness.
Founded by Carlos Moro in 1988, Matarromera is one of the leading wineries in the country, with its success based on exceptional raw material. Situated on the foothill of a hill in Valbuena del Duero, from where the Duero River is visible, it garnered significant international awards early on. In fact, the first vintage of Matarromera received the Grand Gold Medal at the International Wine Competition. Following this winery, the expansion and formation of Bodegas Familiares Matarromera began, making it one of the most important wine conglomerates in the country.

Pairing
Matarromera Gran Reserva 2016is a highly versatile wine, perfect to accompany legumes, cured meats and pâtés, even red meats.
Matarromera Gran Reserva 2016 is based on a single variety, Tempranillo, and the classic expression of the D.O. Ribera del Duero. It is a red wine destined to showcase structure and depth, with the personality characteristic of this region and a viticultural style focused on quality, true to the character of the grape and precise ripening.
The production of Matarromera Gran Reserva 2016 involves a maturation of 24 months in predominantly French oak barrels, a period that refines the wine and adds complexity without masking its fruit base. The aim is to achieve a balance between ripe fruit, wood nuances, and a more prominent palate presence, characteristic of a well-assembled Gran Reserva.
The winery behind Matarromera Gran Reserva 2016, Bodega Matarromera, is associated with the D.O. Ribera del Duero and is managed by Carlos Moro González, with enological work carried out by Javier Aladro. Its philosophy focuses on caring for the raw material and expressing the origin accurately, aligning with the serious and ambitious profile of this wine.
At the table, Matarromera Gran Reserva 2016 pairs very well with red meats, roasts, game, hearty stews, and dishes with intense sauces. It also complements cured cheeses and dishes with profound flavours, where its maturation and Tempranillo character find a good counterpoint.
Following the winemaking tradition of his Castilian ancestors, Carlos Moro founded the Matarromera winery in Valbuena de Duero (Valladolid) in 1988 with a clear objective: to create quality wines using the most advanced technology while respecting traditional winemaking methods. The main challenge undertaken by Carlos Moro was his commitment to new barrels for aging his wines, an initiative that was novel at the time in Ribera del Duero. Another key to Matarromera's success is its excellent vineyards, located in a legendary area of the D.O. Ribera del Duero: Valbuena de Duero.
Matarromera was the first winery of Carlos Moro and the seed of one of the most important wine groups in this country: Bodegas Familiares Matarromera. The first red wine produced by the winery—an ancestor of the brand we now know as Melior—achieved the title of "Best Wine in the World" at the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) competition held in Turkey in 1995. Currently, Bodega Matarromera has 150 hectares of its own vineyards and controls an additional 160 hectares.
