Martín Códax is a giant in the D.O. Rías Baixas which has expanded to other Galician Denominaciones such as the small D.O. Monterrei located south of Ourense, where Mara Martín 2023 comes from. This single-varietal is made from Godello grapes from vineyards located in the valley and slopes of Monterrei. This combination of altitudes was conducive to producing a fresh and full-flavoured wine.
The grapes were harvested at night when the temperature was cool, given the area’s continental climate. They were then cold-pressed to preserve their full potential. After clarification, they underwent alcoholic fermentation at a low temperature to maintain the fruity aromas of the grape variety.
Monterrei is the smallest D.O. in Galicia. It was established in 1996 and is proving to deserve greater recognition. Its white wines are made from Godello grapes and display complex aromas, freshness and great structure on the palate.
Martín Códax started out in 1986 as a cooperative founded by a group of 50 grape growers of the Rías Baixas region. It’s currently a foremost firm with a strong international reputation and a leading name in R&D in Galicia. At the turn of the century, it went from being a winery to a group that produces wine in other Denominaciones such as Monterrei and Bierzo.
Mara Martín 2023 (D.O. Monterrei) is perfect with boiled or grilled shellfish, grilled salmon and slightly matured cheeses, as well as with appetisers.

Martín Códax is the name of one of the most renowned troubadours in national history and the name of the most international Galician winery. Founded in 1986 by a group of winegrowers in the Salnés Valley, it currently stands as one of the key pillars of the D.O. Rías Baixas. A standard-bearer for R&D in Galicia and one of the wineries that has worked the most to promote the albariño variety, it benefits from the viticultural expertise of the renowned professor José Ramón Lissarrague.
Martín Códax is the winery that is introducing albariño to the U.S., a true pioneer of ‘albariño around the world’. It exports 60% of its total production, with almost 50% destined for the U.S. market (the rest goes to the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands…). Thus, every year, one million bottles of Martín Códax albariño cross national borders.
