Malabrigo 2022 is a magnificent single-varietal made from Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), produced in very limited quantities and crafted with meticulous care by Bodegas Cepa 21 only in years when the quality of the grapes is exceptionally outstanding.
The name of this extraordinary red wine itself reveals its unique origin: the vines of Pago Malabrigo, an estate with clay and sandy-loam soils, exposed to strong winds and extreme temperatures, which allow for a very prolonged ripening of the grapes. Despite the months of aging in French oak barrels involved in its careful production, Malabrigo 2022 is marketed outside the traditional categories of Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva—a decision by the winery in line with its bold and modern style.
Cepa 21 is the winery of José Moro, the third generation of a renowned lineage of winemakers from Ribera del Duero. It is located in a valley in Castrillo de Duero (Valladolid) and boasts modern, minimalist-style facilities on a small hilltop that offers wonderful views. Focused on wine tourism, the winery also has its own restaurant. Cepa 21 produces wines with a very appealing image and a contemporary style: fruity and fresh; a true demonstration of the potential of the Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) grape. To achieve this, they cultivate 50 hectares of their own vineyards, most of which are distributed around the winery at an altitude between 780 and 850 meters.
Understanding that high-quality raw material is an essential condition for creating great wines, the winery carries out an exhaustive selection of plots and soil analysis prior to planting, in addition to highly meticulous viticulture (green pruning, cluster thinning...). Harvesting is done by plots, and the grape clusters go through a selection table. The Cepa 21 winery also stands out for its commitment to technology: all the vineyards are monitored with field sensors, Internet of Things, satellites… The most innovative technology is used to record all parameters (humidity, wind, or plant stress).
Garnet cherry color, with a very dense layer.
Intense and very serious nose, highlighting aromas of ripe black fruit (blackberry and cassis), and subtle notes of noble wood.
On the palate, it reveals itself as a fleshy wine, with structured but ripe tannins. Sweet with a very long finish and aftertaste.
