Luna Beberide Art 2022 is part of Luna Beberide's new range of ‘Vinos de Paraje’ wines that come from a specific area. It's made from Mencía grapes from ‘La Recuperada’, the oldest vineyard on the Valdetruchas estate in Villafranca del Bierzo (León), planted in 1918 on a hillside between 600 and 700 metres above sea level, with calcareous clay and decomposed slate soils on bedrock. This 2022 vintage was notable for its exceptional balance between acidity and alcohol, resulting in a fresh, elegant and silky-smooth wine.
The Mencía grapes were partially crushed and fermented in stainless steel tanks for approximately one month. Maceration lasted for another 30 days and spontaneous malolactic fermentation took place in stainless steel. The wine was then transferred to 500-litre French oak barrels, where it was aged for 8 months. The result is a red wine full of personality that reflects the terroir, with hints of minerality and scrubland typical of the vineyard.
Founded in 1988, Bodegas Luna Beberide has become a spearhead of the D.O. Bierzo and is distinguished by its commitment to the maxim of full respect for the terroir. Intervention in the winemaking process is kept to a minimum in order to preserve the identity of the magnificent Bierzo vineyards.
The firm is run by Alejandro Luna, son of the founder Bernardo Luna, and was a pioneer in producing high-quality Mencía wines. The firm can also boast of having benefited from the advice and friendship of the brilliant winemaker Mariano García (Bodegas Mauro), who left his mark on the wines.
Halfway between Cacabelos and Villafranca del Bierzo, Luna Beberide restored an old thirteenth-century house on the Valdetruchas estate, where a large part of its old vineyards are also located.
The Valdetruchas estate embodies the essence of the winery’s vineyards. In total, there are 50 hectares of vineyards distributed across south-facing slopes, which are steeper in the higher areas where the old vines grow in slate soils with clay and limestone content, at altitudes ranging from 450 to 1,000 metres.
The Vino de Paraje Luna Beberide Art 2022 (D.O. Bierzo) has been awarded 94 points by Tim Atkin. This red is ideal with steak au poivre, sautéed mushrooms or the local botillo del Bierzo sausage.
