Luis Cañas Crianza 2022 is the new vintage of one of the most renowned red wines from Rioja Alavesa, produced by a family-owned winery with more than two centuries of winemaking tradition under their belt. Although this vintage has not been rated as Excellent, the winery has managed to maintain its demanding quality standards, delivering a wine that combines freshness, balance, and character. Grown in from vineyards located between 450 and 650 metres above sea level in Villabuena de Álava and neighbouring municipalities, this Crianza reflects the heart and soul of the region.
Luis Cañas Crianza 2022 is made up of 90% Tempranillo enhanced with small amounts of Garnacha, Graciano, Mazuelo, Viura, and Rojal. The grapes were harvested by hand, followed by double sorting of bunches and berries. The wine has been aged for 12 months in French (60%) and American (40%) oak barrels to lend it structure and complexity without sacrificing its fruitiness. The result is a red with good aromatic intensity, ripe tannins, and an acidic bite that makes it fresh and long-lasting.
This red wine is bright cherry red. The nose is dominated by ripe redcurrants, strawberries, and raspberries, with a balsamic and dairy background. On the palate, it's silky, enveloping, and very fruity, ideal for accompanying traditional dishes such as lentil stew, red meat or homemade casseroles, or even for enjoying with a casual meal. Luis Cañas Crianza 2022 is a great choice for anyone looking for a classic Rioja with a modern twist.

The winery
Four generations of humble winegrowers and winemakers are behind this winery, founded in 1970 in Villabuena (Álava), and today one of the most prominent in Rioja Alavesa. A winery that conducts meticulous viticultural work to craft high-quality wines with a focus on the terroir.
In 1989, Juan Luis Cañas, son of Luis Cañas, took over and renovated the family winery, focusing on the production of aged red wines. In 2009, the Amaren wine line, dedicated by the winemaker to his mother, was separated from the previous winery to give rise to the new Bodegas Amaren. Additionally, in 2008, Juan Luis Cañas launched a new project far from his homeland, in the D.O. Ribera del Duero, named Dominio de Cair.
