General Information

Luis Cañas Crianza 2021 (rated Excellent) comes from vineyards located in Villabuena de Álava and adjacent municipalities. Vines 35 years old that grow in calcareous-clay and sandy soils and yield grapes with fresh and fruity flavours. Designed from Tempranillo with small quantities of other traditional varieties: Garnacha, Graciano, Mazuelo, Viura and Rojal.

The grapes were picked by hand and the bunches and berries were sorted before entering the winery. Fermentation was carried out in stainless steel tanks and the wine was aged for 12 months in French (60%) and American (40%) oak barrels. The label displays the ‘Vino de zona’ seal issued by the D.O.Ca. Rioja to certify that the grapes come from vines located in the Rioja Alavesa subzone.

Bodegas Luis Cañas (D.O.Ca. Rioja) is based in the municipality of Villabuena de Álava. Back in the 1990s its owner, Juan Luis Cañas, focused on producing barrel-aged reds. The firm uses cutting-edge winemaking technology and a careful selection of raw materials: double sorting at the vineyard, sorting of bunches and berries.

Luis Cañas Crianza 2021 (D.O.Ca. Rioja) is perfect with rice dishes with meat, stewed partridge or meatballs in a sauce.

The winery

Bodegas Luis Cañas

Four generations of humble winegrowers and winemakers are behind this winery, founded in 1970 in Villabuena (Álava), and today one of the most prominent in Rioja Alavesa. A winery that conducts meticulous viticultural work to craft high-quality wines with a focus on the terroir.

In 1989, Juan Luis Cañas, son of Luis Cañas, took over and renovated the family winery, focusing on the production of aged red wines. In 2009, the Amaren wine line, dedicated by the winemaker to his mother, was separated from the previous winery to give rise to the new Bodegas Amaren. Additionally, in 2008, Juan Luis Cañas launched a new project far from his homeland, in the D.O. Ribera del Duero, named Dominio de Cair.
