Labastida 1786 2022 is a Rioja made entirely from Tempranillo grapes. It comes from Labastida, in Rioja Alavesa, and takes shape from the great Tempranillo vineyards of the area. Bodega Manuel Quintano presents it as an interpretation of the historical evolution of these vines, uniting two ways of understanding work in the field and in the winery, before and after Manuel Quintano.
Labastida 1786 2022 nace from a harvest and manual selection at the moment of optimal ripeness, with half of the grapes treated with whole bunches and the other half destemmed. Its vinification combines a pre-fermentation cold maceration for four days and spontaneous fermentation, with plot-by-plot work and traditional techniques such as manual remontage and grape stomping.
Afterwards, it undergoes 15 months of ageing in French oak barrels of 225 and 500 litres, a step that reinforces its profile as a serious and well-defined wine.
Pairing
Labastida 1786 2022 is a highly versatile choice for enjoying with fatty fish such as salmon or mackerel and semi-aged cheeses. It also pairs very well with light spoon dishes and a charcuterie board.

Winemaking
The half of the Tempranillo bunches go in whole into the cellar and the other half are destemmed, before undergoing a cold pre-ferment maceration for 4 days that prepares the wine for a precise and expressive extraction. Thereafter, the spontaneous fermentation develops separately in small open vessels and in concrete, with manual pumping over and the traditional stomping of the grapes, a combination that favours freshness, complexity and the character of this Labastida red.
Aging
15 months in French oak barrels of 225 and 500 litres.
View
Intense cherry colour, well covered, clean and bright, with violet reflections and a high colour intensity.
Nose
Stands out on the nose for a high aromatic intensity, with a clear expression of red and black fruits. On that base are added notes of raspberry and blackcurrant, together with dairy and toasty nuances that add depth. The overall complexity is enhanced by subtle pastry notes, in a frank, enveloping aroma phase that is very well defined.
Mouth
It has a broad, flavoursome entry with a strong sense of balance that grows more complex as it develops. On the palate it is elegant, with good acidity, an enveloping mouthfeel and a long, deep, persistent finish that leaves a refined impression.
Labastida, with a long-standing winemaking tradition, is located in the northwesternmost area of Rioja, in the highest region of Rioja Alavesa, which results in fresh, aromatic wines with great aging potential. A small municipality sheltered by the Sierra del Toloño and nourished by the Ebro River, it is one of the most favorable areas in Rioja for vine cultivation.
In the mid-1960s, several winemakers from Labastida decided to join forces and founded the Unión de Cosecheros de Labastida, which today is the largest cooperative winery in the Basque Country and is known as Bodega Manuel Quintano. Over the years, this company has implemented numerous changes aimed at developing an artisanal production process and giving great prominence to the vineyard and the soil.
Thus, for winemaking, they use small tanks, with completely manual pump-overs and punch-downs, parcel by parcel... Fermentations are spontaneous, with the idea of allowing each vineyard to express the character of the soil. Subsequently, each parcel's wine ages separately in barrels, enabling visitors to taste several wines from different parcels with unique profiles. The winemaking process is personalized and based on grape tasting prior to harvest. No two productions are the same, and tasting is the main driver of decision-making in the winery throughout the year.
The winery has two wine ranges:
-Solagüen / Labastida Range. This is the traditional range. It includes young wines, a semi-sweet white, and wines with different types and lengths of aging in French and American oak barrels.
-Manuel Quintano Range. This represents the premium range and pays tribute to Manuel Quintano, who introduced modern enology to Rioja in 1786 after his trip to Bordeaux. The project comprises the 50 best hectares of the winery's vineyards, where old vines play a prominent role. These wines are made in small tanks with maximum parcel separation and age in concrete or French oak.
