General Information

La Faraona 2017 represents the pinnacle of winemaking excellence from the winery Descendientes de J. Palacios. This red wine, considered a gem of the Spanish wine scene, is the result of the talent of Álvaro Palacios and Ricardo Pérez, and an exceptional vineyard that gives it a unique personality. Its aging, close to 20 months in French oak barrels, brings complexity and elegance to an extremely limited production.

This wine has been key in the international recognition of the winery, achieving the highest prestige with 100 Parker points in its 2014 vintage. The 2015 vintage came close to that feat with 99 points, and the 2017 continues along that line of excellence. Its refined, mineral, and delicate profile makes it an essential reference for lovers of high-end wines.

Since its founding in 1999, Álvaro Palacios and Ricardo Pérez have bet on the potential of Bierzo and its emblematic variety, mencía. They acquired old vineyards in privileged locations and began producing wines that are now cult objects. Among them, the exclusive La Faraona stands out, along with the notable Moncerbal and Las Lamas, and more accessible labels like Corullón or Pétalos del Bierzo.

The winery

Descendientes de J. Palacios

Also in Bierzo, the Palacios family has managed to find the most hidden vineyards and produce splendid wines. Architects of the great revolution taking place in Bierzo, the young Ricardo Pérez Palacios—one of the descendants of the Palacios Remondo dynasty from La Rioja—and his uncle Álvaro Palacios—one of the gurus of Priorat—embarked on the adventure of crafting a great wine in Bierzo from the native mencía variety. And they succeeded.

They began producing in 1999 after acquiring a few hectares of vineyard and a small winery in Villafranca del Bierzo, which has been restored. They make their wines from mencía grapes, sourced from a vineyard located in a privileged environment with 27 hectares divided into almost 200 plots, planted with old vines of great quality on very steep soils, which Ricardo and Álvaro cultivate using biodynamic methods. This way, they produce fresh, fragrant, juicy, and lively wines, a true reflection of the viticultural personality of the Bierzo hills.
