General Information

Veni, vidi, vici. The first vintage of the red wine Horcajo, the most premium wine from the Valladolid-based winery Bodegas Cepa 21, entered the Ribera del Duero wine scene in grand style. Horcajo 2018 does not fall short in quality, as its great richness of nuances makes it a well-rounded red wine that has already started to garner excellent reviews and ratings.

For the production of Horcajo, Cepa 21, the winery of José Moro in Ribera del Duero, selected the best tempranillo grapes from one of its most special plots, the Horcajo (hence the name of the wine). Located at an altitude between 800 and 820 meters above sea level, the vineyard, set on a steep strip-shaped slope, is planted on loam soils. This unique location and the fresh microclimate of the area, which encourages long cycles and slow ripening, enhanced the wine's great aromatic intensity, and the 18-month aging in French oak barrels added even more complexity.

Based in Castrillo de Duero (Valladolid), Cepa 21 is committed to innovation and the utmost care in every detail involved in the winemaking process. Horcajo 2018 represents the pinnacle of this philosophy.

Cepa 21 is the winery of José Moro, the third generation of a renowned lineage of winemakers from Ribera del Duero. It is located in a valley in Castrillo de Duero (Valladolid) and features modern, minimalist-style facilities on a small hill that offers wonderful views. Focused on wine tourism, the winery also has its own restaurant. Cepa 21 produces wines with a very good image and a contemporary appeal: fruity and fresh; a true demonstration of the potential of the tinto fino (tempranillo) grape. To achieve this, it relies on 50 hectares of its own vineyards, most of which are distributed around the winery at an altitude between 780 and 850 meters.

Aware that high-quality raw materials are an essential condition for achieving great wines, the winery conducts an exhaustive selection of plots and soil monitoring prior to planting, in addition to meticulous viticulture practices (green pruning, cluster thinning...). Harvesting is done by parcels, and the grape clusters go through a selection table.

The winery also stands out for its commitment to technology: all the vineyards are monitored with field sensors, Internet of Things, satellites… The most innovative technology is used to record all parameters (humidity, wind, or plant stress).
