General Information

Hombros 2023 is the flagship wine of Casar de Burbia and an undisputed reference in the D.O. Bierzo. Its name evokes the "shoulders" of the grape cluster, the first branches that concentrate the best grapes, symbolizing the pursuit of excellence that defines the winery. The 2023 vintage, rated as Excellent, comes exclusively from the 15 hectares of the Valdaiga site in Valtuille de Arriba, one of the highest and most privileged areas of Bierzo. There, surrounded by illustrious neighbors such as Emilio Moro and Mauro, the vineyards convey a unique identity reflected in every glass. For this reason, it has achieved the classification of Vino de Paraje, which is awarded to wines that represent the highest expression of the terroir: it originates from a unique vineyard, with its own personality defined by its soil, climate, and altitude.

The story of Casar de Burbia begins in 1989, when Nemesio Fernández started acquiring vineyards in Valtuille de Arriba. In 1998, he founded the winery together with his son, in a joint project that today encompasses 27 hectares spread across 52 plots. With a philosophy that combines respect for tradition and technical rigor, the winery has established itself as one of the most serious in Bierzo. Their obsession with returning to the past is reflected in details such as the preservation of three historic clay vessels, which still form part of their winemaking process.

Hombros 2023 is made exclusively from mencía grapes, hand-harvested and macerated with their skins, without stems, following artisanal practices aimed at achieving the maximum expression of the terroir. Fermentation is carried out with native yeasts, and the wine matures for 12 months in French oak barrels, with moderate use of new wood to preserve the fruit and minerality. This process gives the wine complexity, structure, and a perfect balance between freshness and depth, with a distinctive character of its origin.

The winery

Bodegas Casar de Burbia

In the early 1980s, a time when many farmers in Bierzo were getting rid of their vines because they were not generating significant profits, Nemesio Fernández began acquiring old vineyards in the best areas of this Leonese region, around Valtuille. It was not until 1989 that the Casar de Burbia project was launched. Isidro, Nemesio's son, is now at the helm of this winery based in Carracedelo.

Casar de Burbia boasts a fantastic viticultural heritage based almost exclusively on the mencía variety. It has 27 hectares of vineyards spread across more than 250 plots, all located on the slopes of Valtuille de Arriba, the cradle of Bierzo. The vineyards are certified Organic Agriculture by CAECYL. Without a doubt, this is one of the wineries driving the exceptional quality growth of the D.O. Bierzo.
