Heredad de Baroja Reserva 2016 was grown on old (35 years) Tempranillo vines located in Rioja Alavesa. That year’s grape harvest – 2016 – was of excellent quality and produced very fresh and elegant wines. After sorting, the grapes were destemmed and pressed, and the must was fermented in stainless steel vats using the Ganimede method which takes advantage of the carbon dioxide naturally generated during fermentation to soak the cap automatically. This innovative method prevents oxidation and preserves the wine’s colour and aromas more effectively.
The wine was finally aged for 24 months in 1- to 2-year-old French and American oak barrels and further matured in the bottle for another 12 months.
The Meruelo family founded Bodegas Heredad de Baroja in 1964, in Elvillar de Álava, one of the highest points in Rioja Alavesa. Its vineyards are located at an altitude of 600 metres in lime-clay soils, where the grapes attain a marvellous balance between ripeness and acidity thanks to the extreme fluctuations in day- and night-time temperatures during the ripening period.Inside the winery stainless steel tanks with a capacity of between 12,000 and 30,000 kilos are used and each stage is thoroughly monitored… all with the aim of achieving a high-quality wine that reflects the character of these unique vines.
