Although its origin and great prestige lie in Burgundy, the select pinot noir is a traveling grape that delivers magnificent results in other latitudes, such as the lands of New Zealand. In this country, specifically in the Nelson region, adjacent to the renowned Marlborough, Heaphy Pinot Noir 2023 is born. A red wine that reflects the magnificent maritime influence of the area and is also highly representative of the style that has brought prestige to New Zealand wine: modern, young, and varietal. It captivates from the moment it's uncorked: aromatic, flavorful, fresh, and dominated by fruity, balsamic, and floral notes.
Heaphy Pinot Noir 2023, 100% pinot noir, is sourced from three vineyards located in Tasman, Upper Moutere, and Ruby Bay, in the Nelson region (northwest of New Zealand's South Island). These are old vines planted in 1973, and only the best clusters, carefully selected, make up this red wine.
The destemmed grapes ferment in open tanks. After a ‘délestage’ twice a day for three weeks to ensure a gentle extraction of color and tannins, part of the wine is transferred to barrels, where it matures for 10 months. Malolactic fermentation takes place when the temperature rises in the cellar during spring. Finally, the red wine is filtered and bottled.
In the 70s, New Zealand's wine industry began to gain prominence, especially thanks to white wines made with sauvignon blanc and their vibrant freshness. These first sauvignon blancs that drew international attention came from Marlborough, the country's most important wine region, located in the northeast of the South Island. The rise of this white variety, originally from France and perfectly adapted to these latitudes, allowed other varieties like pinot noir to stand out, as well as the development of other regions producing wines of undeniable quality, such as the neighboring region of Nelson.
Today, New Zealand is a prestigious country in the wine sector. It doesn’t have a large production in quantitative terms but excels in quality. Additionally, the price of its wines tends to be high. Its hallmark: varietal wines created with grapes of French origin.
Due to New Zealand's insular nature, its climate enjoys a magnificent maritime influence, which positively benefits the quality of its wines. A land of diversity and contrasts, it has championed its ‘cool climate wines’. Moreover, the significant development of technology has also contributed to the quality of its wines.
Heaphy Vineyards, the winery behind this wine, is the new project by Boutinot, a group present in several countries. It is a boutique winery located in the hills of Upper Moutere (Nelson Tasman), working with only 9.8 hectares of hillside vineyard.

It is recommended to taste at a temperature of 17ºC
In appearance, it shows a beautiful ripe cherry red color with a slightly purplish rim, of medium layer.
On the nose, it is complex and perfumed, with upfront aromas of ripe forest fruits (cherry, blackberry) accompanied by spicy notes (bay leaf, nutmeg), rich balsamic hints (licorice), and floral tones (violet); all perfectly balanced over a pleasant vanilla background.
On the palate, it is flavorful, very well-balanced, with acidity that brings freshness. Long and interesting finish with pleasant balsamic notes already hinted at on the palate.
