A white wine for always and forever. This is how Bodegas Gregorio Martínez describes the single-varietal viura Gregorio Martínez Blanco Selección Mónica Martínez 2016, a creation integrated into their top range. As the name itself indicates, it was the manager of the firm, a member of the proprietary saga of the Rioja firm, who was responsible for selecting the old vineyards from whose fruits it was made. Viuras planted at altitude and in clay-sandy soils, which after precise production and 48 months of aging (24 in wood, 24 in bottle) resulted in an exceptional white, of limited production, full, concentrated, and unctuous.

Tasting notes

Gregorio Martínez Selección Mónica Martínez is a wine with an intense and brilliant old gold color.

Powerful nose of withered white flowers that give way to pastry notes (brioche), vanilla, stone fruit (peach), and fruit salad. When swirling the glass, balsamic aromas and subtle mineral touches appear.

Full on the palate, with great concentration, density, and unctuousness. The good acidity gives it length and a velvety sensation.

The winery

At the foothills of the Moncalvillo and Camero mountain ranges, on a privileged balcony overlooking the valleys of the Ebro and Iregua, lies the vineyard of Bodegas Gregorio Martínez, at an average altitude of 700 meters above sea level, in one of the highest areas of Rioja Alta.

The origins of the winery date back to the 1970s, led by Gregorio Martínez, a viticulturist who, over the years, consolidated the estate by bringing together parcels from the nearby areas of Logroño, Nalda, Sorzano, and Entrena. After his untimely death, the second and third generations of the family took over the estate, launching the winery as it is known today in 2001.

Bodegas Gregorio Martínez has a total of 40 hectares of vineyards, predominantly planted with tempranillo, featuring five distinct clones. The altitude of the vines, their northern orientation, and the composition of the soils in which they take root (red clay, sands, and sedimentary rocks) allow for the production of fine, distinguished wines with great aging potential.
