Gran Torelló Brut Nature 2016 is one of the flagship sparkling wines from the Torelló house. Once again, the star of the production is the best blend of an exceptional selection of grapes from the xarel·lo, macabeo, and parellada varieties, sourced from the family estate Can Martí and grown on clay and limestone soils under a typically Mediterranean climate. The more than 84 months of aging in the bottle makes it one of the crown jewels, a fantastic sparkling wine with a small and very fine bubble to savor, with a freshness highlighted by its magnificent acidity.

General Information

Gran Torelló Brut Nature 2016 is an extraordinary sparkling wine made from a coupage of the xarel·lo, macabeo, and parellada varieties from the family-owned vineyards located at the Can Martí estate, the center of operations of the Torelló winery, in the municipality of Gelida, in the heart of Penedés. The base wine is very fruity and perfectly balanced between acidity and alcohol content, with body and structure, ideal for producing this long-aged sparkling wine.

Torelló is a family winery born in Alto Penedés in 1951, when Francesc Torello i Casanovas decided to produce wines and sparkling wines for bottling. The Torelló family has not known the wine world only since then, but has been connected to it since 1395. Currently, the winery has this 135-hectare estate, where they cultivate, in an ecological manner, different native and foreign varieties of the highest quality. Among the white grapes, they cultivate macabeo, xarel·lo, parellada, chardonnay, and subirat parent. As for the red varieties, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, pinot noir, and syrah stand out.

With work based on organic farming, Torelló is also specialized in long aging as in this category of sparkling wine. In the production of this Gran Torelló Brut Nature, the grapes are harvested manually and quickly transported to the presses, where they are gently pressed separately depending on the variety. Once this is done, the resulting must is fermented with its own wild yeasts. Finally, the wine undergoes a minimum aging of 84 months in the bottle and a disgorging without the addition of sugar.

Gran Torelló Brut Nature 2016 is an elegant sparkling wine, with some complexity and fine bubbles that pairs with all kinds of appetizers, roasted fish, seafood or fish rice dishes, and creamy cheeses.

Tasting notes

Gran Torelló Brut Nature is a straw yellow wine with golden reflections, clean and transparent, with fine and constant bubbles.

On the nose, it is clean, elegant, with subtle complexity reminiscent of ripe white fruit, lemon blossom, elderflower, and honey flower. This is complemented by hints of nuts, cream, and toasted notes.

On the palate, fresh sensations thanks to the well-integrated acidity, leading to a delicate finish of white flowers, with touches of brioche and white fruit.

The winery

The family history begins in the year 1395 at the Can Martí estate and its farmhouses. And it will be 22 generations later, in the year 1951, when the surname Torelló appears, one of the reference families in the cava sector in our country.

The Can Martí estate is the nerve center of Torelló's vineyards and cellars, located in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, considered by all as the heart and capital of cava.

The Can Martí estate covers 135 hectares in the fertile Penedès region. It cultivates white grape varieties such as macabeo, xarel·lo, parellada, chardonnay, and subirat parent, as well as red grape varieties such as cabernet sauvignon, merlot, pinot noir, and syrah.

For the production of cavas, Torelló selects only vines over 30 years old. This is done to ensure consistency and quality in the harvest.

The soils have a clay-limestone mix and are poor in organic matter. Pruning is done short to control vineyard yield and grape quality. As for the climate, it is typically Mediterranean, with an average temperature of 16 ºC and rainfall concentrated in spring and autumn.

For less than a decade, the Torelló winery has begun a process of converting its vineyards to organic viticulture, but in truth, they have been practicing environmentally friendly methods for many more years.
