General Information

Fariña is a family-run winery, a pioneer in creating and achieving recognition for the D.O. Toro, whose history has always been linked to changes and developments in this wine-producing area. Together with Manu Fariña (3rd generation of the family), our technical experts have played an active part in creating the blend for this Gran Colegiata Reserva 2021.

The result is an exclusive version – in both content and label design – of an iconic Toro wine made specially for Vinoselección, a gem of a wine designed from grapes grown on ungrafted Tinta de Toro vines more than 60 years old and harvested by hand. The grapes were stemmed and underwent alcoholic fermentation for 12 to 15 days at between 24 and 28 degrees. The wine has been aged for 12 months in American oak barrels.

If there’s one winery that can boast of being a pioneer in its own part of the country it’s got to be Fariña. Founded in 1942 and currently run by the third generation of the family, it now owns more than 300 hectares of vineyards, a guarantee of the high quality of the wines it makes.  Manuel Fariña, a member of the second generation, was a pioneer in introducing to Toro winemaking techniques employed in the most important winegrowing areas in the world, such as the use of stainless steel vats, controlling fermentation temperature, and selecting the most suitable barrels for ageing. These changes have converted the D.O. Toro into a state-of-the-art winemaking area.  His son Manu Fariña is currently in charge of the winemaking side.

Gran Colegiata Reserva 2021 (D.O. Toro) is excellent with game such as venison in red wine or hare chasseur.

Tasting notes

Color rojo granate. En nariz se aprecian aromas de regaliz, frutas negras y ciruelas, integrados con recuerdos de vainilla, cacao y balsámicos. En boca es sedoso, con una buena estructura, complejo y bien equilibrado.

The winery

Bodegas Fariña

The D.O. Toro would not be the same without the work carried out over the years by its most emblematic winery: Bodegas Fariña, a family-owned winery, pioneering, innovative, and a benchmark in the region. It is the only winery that has been present since the origins of the designation and the firm responsible for the great leap in quality achieved by its wines.

Following in the footsteps of the founder, Salvador Fariña, who began his work in a rudimentary winery dug into the ground in Casaseca de las Chanas, Manuel Fariña López turned this winery into the spearhead of the Tinta de Toro variety. He was a pioneer in Toro in applying winemaking techniques used in the world's most important wine regions, such as fermentation in stainless steel tanks, temperature control during fermentation, and selecting the most suitable barrels for aging wines. A series of innovations that laid the foundations of what many call “the great miracle of Toro”; changes that made it possible to move away from the bold and somewhat heavy wines of a past era to create powerful and elegant wines that have made the D.O. Toro a leading region.

Bodegas Fariña has over 300 hectares of its own vineyards, a true guarantee when producing high-quality wines in the area. Today, Manuel (Manu) Fariña Pérez, son of Manuel and grandson of Salvador, stands as the third generation of winemakers at the winery.
