When Carlos Esteva took over the reins of Can Ràfols dels Caus in 1979, he did so with the idea of introducing new grape varieties and cultivation methods, always striving for vinicultural quality. This is especially reflected in some of his wines, such as this Gran Caus 2019. A red wine made with a coupage of the varieties cabernet franc, merlot, and cabernet sauvignon from old vines nestled in the heart of the Garraf massif.
Winemaker and viticulturist Carlos Esteva seeks in his Can Ràfols dels Caus winery for great wines to express the nuances of their terroir and for the work of their creator to be distinguished in the final result. For Esteva, “exceptional wines have that something that goes beyond what we are capable of perceiving through the eyes, nose, and palate.”
This Gran Caus 2019, belonging to the D.O Penedés, is harvested manually. Each variety undergoes a pre-fermentative fermentation separately with natural yeasts in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. The wine ages in French oak barrels for 12 months and rests for a minimum of 6 years in the bottle before being released to the market, which gives it elegance and balance. Gran Caus is an ideal wine to accompany roasted and grilled meats, stews, duck breast, aged cheeses, and desserts made with berries and chocolate.
Final generoso y agradablemente persistente.
The Can Ràfols Dels Caus winery was founded in 1979 with the arrival of Carlos Esteva to his grandfather's estate of the same name. Esteva's arrival at the estate marked a revolution, as he regenerated the exploitation of its vineyards by introducing new varieties and cultivation methods aimed at achieving quality, giving the wines a unique character and the winery its own identity.
After several decades in the wine sector, Carlos Esteva continues to stand out for his extensive knowledge of the wine world. He has been nominated by the renowned Académie Internationale du vin. Additionally, he has created countless references at Can Ràfols Dels Caus and is involved in other projects such as Mas Oller in Empordà and Can Camps.
In a unique and singular environment, the wines of Can Ràfols Dels Caus are born in soils with a significant limestone mass located at the southernmost end of the Litoral mountain range, bordered by the Penedès plains and the Mediterranean Sea.
25 years after Carlos Esteva took the reins of Can Ràfols Dels Caus, he decided to build a new winery with the aim of improving operations, expanding qualitative potential, and continuing research.
Carlos Esteva seeks to produce great wines that express the nuances of their terroir. For him, exceptional wines have that something that goes beyond what we are capable of perceiving through the eyes, nose, and palate.
