Finca Río Negro Selección Especial 2020 marks the return of one of the most distinctive and successful wines in our recent history. Its personality is born from an extreme environment and meticulous winemaking that we already know well from previous vintages. The new release preserves the same spirit of precision and character, reaffirming why this wine has become an undisputed favourite among our members.
Bodega Finca Río Negro, located in Cogolludo (Guadalajara), has established itself as an unexpected benchmark in central Spain. Its 22 hectares of estate-owned vineyards, planted between 1999 and 2005 and cultivated on clay-loam soils with rounded stones and acidic pH, benefit from a harsh climate that encourages slow ripening and exceptional aromatic concentration. This family project has proven that the Alcarria can produce red wines of outstanding quality, now ranking among the most distinctive wineries in the region.
In this edition, Finca Río Negro Selección Especial 2020 once again relies on its blend of tempranillo, cabernet sauvignon, syrah and merlot, offering deep blackberry aromas, well-integrated oak notes and mineral and balsamic hints. Twelve months of ageing in French and American oak barrels bring complexity and structure, while the altitude and extreme vineyard climate impart freshness and persistence. The result is a generous, elegant red wine with a clearly defined identity.
All this makes Finca Río Negro Selección Especial 2020 an essential wine for those seeking character, authenticity and a story to tell. Its profile makes it perfect alongside red meats, traditional stews, aged cheeses or game dishes. The consistently high ratings achieved by this winery’s wines year after year suggest that this edition will follow the same path of recognition. A wine that deserves a prominent place on your table and in your cellar.
Clean and bright, cherry red with violet hues and high colour intensity.
Intense aroma on the nose, deep and complex, dominated by blackberry notes, seamlessly interwoven with the characteristic nuances of different types of oak. Mineral and balsamic hints.
On the palate it is powerful yet elegant, full-bodied, fresh and very persistent.
The origin of the winery Finca Río Negro dates back to 1998, when José Manuel Fuentes and his family decided to plant vineyards in Cogolludo (Guadalajara), at no less than 1000 meters altitude, in an area where viticulture had been practically abandoned, and at a considerable distance from other vineyards, which, however, centuries ago was the cradle of great wines. After years of research, in 2010 the winery launched its first wine on the market.
Since then, its rise has been meteoric. Currently, Finca Río Negro has 44 hectares of its own vineyards. It cultivates the red varieties tempranillo, cabernet sauvignon, syrah, and merlot, as well as the white gewürztraminer. Additionally, it is committed to the recovery of an almost extinct variety, the tinto fragoso.
Since March 2025, the Fuentes family winery has been recognized as a Vino de Pago, the highest category that can be achieved in Spain. Thus, the brand has its own protected designation of origin (D.O. Río Negro), in recognition of the quality and uniqueness of its vineyard.
