General Information

Félix Azpilicueta, a pioneer who founded his first winery in 1881 in Fuenmayor (Rioja Alta), is one of the most important figures in the history of Rioja wine. Only the winery’s high-end wines like this one bear his name. Félix Azpilicueta Reserva 2018 is a blend of Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo. It was fermented for between 20 and 30 days at a constant temperature of between 28º and 30ºC before being aged for 21 months in oak barrels.

Belonging to the group of wineries owned by the giant Pernord Ricard, a leader in producing, selling and exporting quality Spanish wines, Bodegas Azpilicueta (D.O.Ca. Rioja) was founded in 1881 by Félix Azpilicueta with the original name Romeral. In 2001 Azpilicueta opened its new facilities: a modern, sustainable building where traditional processes take place such as gravity-flow and ageing in underground cellars. The reputed winemaker Elena Adell is in charge of the Azpilicueta range.

The winery

Bodegas Azpilicueta

Integrated into the group of wineries of the giant Pernod Ricard, a leader in the production, commercialization, and export of quality wines from Spain to more than 70 countries, Bodegas Azpilicueta was founded in 1881 by Félix Azpilicueta under the original name of Romeral. Since the 1990s, the new technical department of the group has been firmly committed to recovering the essence of aged Rioja wines, choosing Azpilicueta to carry out this wine dissemination endeavor.

In 2001, Azpilicueta inaugurated new facilities: a modern and sustainable building where architecture and cutting-edge winemaking perfectly complement each other. These facilities (where the wines of the Campo Viejo winery, owned by the same group, are also produced) were designed by the renowned Rioja architect Ignacio Quemada.

Bodegas Azpilicueta has 800 hectares of vineyards to work within the D.O.Ca. Rioja. Most of the vineyards supplying the company are located around Fuenmayor, a municipality with an irregular topography that allows work with plots at different altitudes, orientations, and slopes. The renowned winemaker Elena Adell leads the Azpilicueta wine range.
