At the highest point of the Corullón area, at 975 m, lies one of the finest vineyards in Bierzo. This is the El Ferro site, a plot of only 0.5 hectares where over 70-year-old mencía vines grow on slate soil slopes. Here, this spectacular red wine is born: La Faraona 2020.

La Faraona 2020 is the most exclusive wine from Descendientes de J. Palacios. A red wine at the pinnacle of Spanish winemaking. Its greatness lies in the masterful hands of its creators: Álvaro Palacios and his nephew Ricardo Pérez, and above all, the exceptional ‘terroir’ from which it originates. Perfected with 6 months of aging in French oak, it embodies luxury in a bottle, with a very limited production.
For Descendientes de J. Palacios, La Faraona has been their key to entering the wine Olympus, thanks to the 100 Parker points achieved by the 2014 vintage; a feat repeated with the 2018 harvest. This sublime red from Bierzo flirts with perfection, vintage after vintage, thanks to its elegance, finesse, delicacy, and pronounced mineral character.
Convinced of the great potential of Bierzo and its queen grape, mencía, Álvaro Palacios and Ricardo Pérez founded their own winery in the region in 1999. They acquired a handful of old vines, nestled in unique landscapes, and began crafting spectacular wines that have already become true cult objects, such as the exclusive La Faraona, the magnificent Moncerbal and Las Lamas, or the more accessible Corullón and Pétalos del Bierzo.
Also in Bierzo, the Palacios family has managed to find the most hidden vineyards and produce splendid wines. Architects of the great revolution taking place in Bierzo, the young Ricardo Pérez Palacios—one of the descendants of the Palacios Remondo dynasty from La Rioja—and his uncle Álvaro Palacios—one of the gurus of Priorat—embarked on the adventure of crafting a great wine in Bierzo from the native mencía variety. And they succeeded.
They began producing in 1999 after acquiring a few hectares of vineyard and a small winery in Villafranca del Bierzo, which has been restored. They make their wines from mencía grapes, sourced from a vineyard located in a privileged environment with 27 hectares divided into almost 200 plots, planted with old vines of great quality on very steep soils, which Ricardo and Álvaro cultivate using biodynamic methods. This way, they produce fresh, fragrant, juicy, and lively wines, a true reflection of the viticultural personality of the Bierzo hills.
