General Information

Its complexity, aromatic finesse, and freshness make Exopto 2021 a different, surprising, and elegant wine. The most select and exclusive red from Bodegas Exopto was born from graciano (70%), tempranillo (30%), and garnacha (10%) vines, between 30 and 80 years old, planted in El Portillo, a half-hectare vineyard located at 500 meters altitude in Abalos (Rioja Alta), on clay and limestone soils; and in Lodecara, at 400m altitude with sandy soils and pebbles.

Bodegas Exopto draws from Rioja tradition to offer its personal reinterpretation through wines that captivate with their modern style, a marked fruity presence, and the subtlety provided by aging in the finest woods on the market.

This is precisely the profile of Exopto 2021, a magnificent blend, where the graciano shows its purity without compromise, after a meticulous production process that included manual destemming berry by berry; fermentation in oak vats; 21 days of maceration and 18 months of aging in used French oak barrels. Due to the dry climate, this vintage has resulted in structured and balanced wines, with very good aromatic expression.

Its organoleptic characteristics make it the ideal rioja to accompany game meats, beef roasts, lamb stews, and robust cheeses like Manchego or Idiazábal, and its extremely high quality has conquered the most expert palates.

Tasting notes

Dark violet color, almost black.

Its aromatic palette ranges from ripe black forest fruits to Mediterranean herbs and underbrush, with hints of vanilla, roasted coffee, pepper, and licorice.

On the palate, it is silky, with prominent flavors of cherry, plum, cassis, dark chocolate, and a spicy and mineral touch. With very well-integrated tannins and great freshness, it stands out for its long, consistent finish with a smoky note.

The winery

At the beginning of the year 2000, the Bordelais Tom Puyaubert settled in La Rioja to develop his activity as a representative of a famous French cooperage. Daily contact with the best Spanish winemakers and his knowledge of the Rioja wine culture and its enviable vineyards encouraged him, in 2003, to embark on his own project. Bodegas Exopto takes its name from the Latin verb meaning "to strongly desire, to hope with great enthusiasm." It is precisely this passionate spirit that guides his steps and the creation of an interesting range of white and red wines that aim to be a faithful expression of La Rioja and its terroir.

Puyaubert's winery is based in Laguardia, the capital of Rioja Alavesa, and its facilities give birth to wines full of color, fruit, and freshness, with a fine and subtle presence of the noblest woods. All of Bodegas Exopto's creations originate from three of the great varieties that make up the classic Rioja blend: tempranillo, garnacha, and graciano. These come from 15 micro-plots of vineyards, aged between 30 and 90 years, covering a total surface area of 10 hectares, and are distributed between the village of Abalos (Rioja Alta) and the slopes of Monte Yerga in the southern part of the region.

In the winery, the aging of Exopto wines stands out for the exclusive use of French oak barrels of different grain types and toasting levels to achieve greater oxygenation, preserve the fruit, or contribute complexity, minerality, structure, or balance.
