Creators' opinion

The winery

Bodegas Juan Gil

Founded in 1916, Bodegas Juan Gil is a family winery that has elevated the name of Jumilla and Mediterranean wines to the highest level on the international stage. Currently governed by the fourth generation, with Miguel Gil as the visible head, it has already become a wine empire with several brands in other regions. The original winery was located in the urban area of Jumilla, where previous generations of the family produced bulk wines from monastrell. The new facilities are located in the Paraje de la Aragona, 10 km from Jumilla, surrounded by 350 hectares of vineyards at over 700 meters above sea level. From there come wines that represent the most modern and dynamic side of the denomination.

Miguel Gil studied aeronautical engineering, but in the nineties, he returned to his homeland; inheriting the legacy of his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he directed his professional life towards the world of wine. After working at another historic and pioneering winery in the region, Luzón, in 2001 he decided to take charge of the family winery, as well as founding a new winery which he named El Nido. He knew that conquering the international market was essential, as at the time the denomination had not yet established itself as a quality reference. Thus, he focused on the best vineyards and the best barrels, and won over the U.S. market, where open-minded consumers embraced his wines for their exceptional quality-to-price ratio.

By 2004, more than 75,000 bottles of Juan Gil 12 Meses 2002, their most emblematic wine, were being sold in the United States. Shortly thereafter, their wines El Nido and Clio received major recognition from critic Robert Parker. Today, Juan Gil is the seed of a powerful group: Viñas Familia Gil, which continues to grow, always committed to terroir and native varieties.
