This is a Gran Reserva with all the complexity that made Rioja great in a style that’s unique in the world. Cune Gran Reserva 2020 is preceded by the success of the two previous vintages (2018 and 2019). It's a very special wine and the most refined version of the Cune range, a century-old brand. Grapes from the winery's best Rioja Alta vineyards, those with the lowest yields, went into making this wine. Manual harvesting is another of its hallmarks. Don’t miss out on this superb wine: you can't go wrong with this red, which strikes a perfect t balance between classic and modern. You'll only find it at Vinoselección.

General Information

Cune Gran Reserva 2020 is the result of collaboration between the winemaking team at CVNE and the technical team at Vinoselección, who chose from among the different batches and barrels to create a unique and exclusive wine. The result is a red with a personalised composition and label. It’s made from the classic Rioja blend: 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano and Mazuelo.

The grapes came from a selection of vineyards located in Rioja Alta, 45 years old on average and harvested by hand. Alcoholic fermentation took place in small stainless steel and concrete tanks using native yeasts followed by malolactic fermentation in concrete tanks. Finally, the wine was aged for 24 months in American and French oak barrels.

The result is an elegant, balanced wine that’s great to drink now and has an excellent future ahead of it. It's the perfect blend of classic and modern, displaying the characteristic elegance of these long-lasting wines but with fruit and backbone too.

The CVNE winery has been in business for 145 years and continues to be one of the most important Spanish wine producers. It’s still based in its original location in Haro’s station district, which is the heart of the D.O. as it’s where the adventure of the pioneering Rioja wineries began: CVNE was one of the first to bottle and export wine in Spain. Over the years CVNE has branched out to become a thriving group with wineries in other parts of Rioja and other D.O.s. Cune is still their flagship wine.

The red Cune Gran Reserva 2020 (D.O.Ca. Rioja) is superb with roast suckling lamb chops or beef stew with vegetables and mushrooms.

Tasting notes

Attractive cherry red colour with a subtle brick-red rim, vivid and bright.

Elegant and delicate on the nose. Complex notes of leather and musk give way to pipe tobacco and toasted cedar, followed by hints of red fruit jam (cherries) with touches of vanilla and cloves.

On the palate, it displays magnificent, elegant and well-ripened tannins, resulting in a smooth and mouth-coating wine with a magnificent backbone and excellent acidity that lends it freshness, liveliness and longevity. Long finish with spicy notes blended with hints of ripe fruit.

The Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España is one of the great symbols of the Estación de Haro neighborhood, the great capital of Rioja wine. Founded in 1879 by the brothers Raimundo and Eusebio Real de Asúa, CVNE (as it is known worldwide) can proudly claim to have remained at the top throughout its history. Ten years after its creation, the winery inaugurated an impressive barrel hall designed by the studio of Alexandre Gustave Eiffel. By 1900, it was already producing nearly 80,000 bottles, an unthinkable feat for the time. The 20th century established CVNE as an institution of Spanish wine.

Over 140 years, it has successfully combined tradition and innovation to create wines that today are the standard-bearers of Rioja reds and have garnered international critical acclaim. Its Imperial Gran Reserva 2004 made history when it was chosen as Wine of the Year 2013 by the prestigious American magazine Wine Spectator, marking the first time a Spanish wine received this recognition.

Since its foundation, CVNE has expanded its heritage and grown with avant-garde projects at different times in its history, such as the creation of Viñedos del Contino or Viña Real.
