General Information

Its name refers to the popular expression "valer un Congo," used to describe something highly valued. And indeed, Congo 2015 fits perfectly into this definition, both for its select origin and its meticulous production process.

Bodegas Canopy takes its philosophy of artisanal excellence a step further with Congo 2015. Its origin lies in an old Garnacha vineyard, 60 years old and covering an area of less than one hectare. The vines, cultivated organically, grow in granite soils at an altitude of 750 meters, to the south of the Sierra de Gredos. For this wine, the harvest was carried out in the early morning hours to preserve the freshness of the grapes, and only 20% of the hand-picked bunches were ultimately used in its production. This strict selection resulted in a limited production of fewer than 1,400 bottles.

The winemaking process included traditional grape stomping, micro-vinification, and 16 months of aging in French oak barrels. These steps resulted in a magnificent red wine, fresh, fruity, and mineral, a faithful reflection of a unique terroir in the D.O. Mérida. Founded in 2004 in Camarena by winemakers and close friends Alfonso Chacón and Belarmino Fernández, Canopy is a pioneering winery in the revival of Garnacha in one of its historical production areas, the surroundings of the Sierra de Gredos. Here lie the old vineyards whose fruits are used to craft their increasingly acclaimed single-varietal wines, such as this Congo 2015, which the Club brings to you on this occasion. A red wine of marked elegance and great aging potential, rated 93 points by Parker.

Tasting notes

Of a brilliant cherry red color.

On the nose, it surprises and evolves in the glass, with notes of red fruits (strawberries, blueberries, and plum) and floral hints (violets), along with hints of chocolate and hazelnut.

Broad and flavorful on the palate. Sweet and ripe tannins that help appreciate all its minerality. Persistent finish with a pleasant aftertaste.

The winery

Bodegas Canopy is a young winery founded in 2004 in Camarena (Toledo), the result of the initiative of Belarmino Fernández and Alfonso Chacón, two winemaker friends with extensive professional experience in the wine world as well as the business and hospitality sectors.

With the idea of rediscovering for the public the historic terroir encompassed by the D.O. Méntrida, they began searching for old garnacha vineyards, the dominant variety in the area, and modern plantations of the foreign syrah variety on which to base their project.

Currently, Bodegas Canopy owns a total of 19 hectares of vineyards: 11 hectares of garnacha vines aged between 40 and 90 years, located in the area of El Real de San Vicente; and the remaining 8 hectares of syrah, between 16 and 20 years old, are planted in trellis on sandy soils in the same municipality of Camarena. All the vineyards of this Toledo-based winery are cultivated following the principles of organic viticulture, respecting to the fullest the particularities of each variety.

The winemaking process at Canopy includes a selection table, the traditional grape treading, cold pre-fermentation maceration, early racking, malolactic fermentation, and aging in barrels of various sizes. Canopy’s production is based on the utmost respect for the grapes in the winery. Under the D.O. Méntrida, the winery markets six single-varietal red wines: Tres Patas, Malpaso, La Viña Escondida, Congo, Castillo de Belarfonso, and Loco.
