General Information

Bodega Carlos Moro is one of the projects of the renowned Castilian-Leonese winemaker, owner of the Grupo Matarromera. Located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, in the heart of D.O.Ca. Rioja, the firm boasts an underground cellar of 150 meters with the capacity to age up to 2,000 barrels. However, this initiative also includes other select estate wines in its catalog, personally chosen by Carlos Moro, with very limited production and sourced from symbolic plots of other denominations of origin.

A good example, from D.O. Cigales, is the magnificent red wine Carlos Moro Finca Valdehierro 2015, an exceptional 100% Tempranillo born from a parcel of poor soils with a loamy texture, limestone conglomerate, and abundant alluvial on the surface, populated with a 95-year-old vineyard, whose fruits undergo a triple selection: in the field, cluster by cluster and, finally, grain by grain.

With a careful vinification, completed with 16 months of aging in new oak barrels, Carlos Moro Finca Valdehierro 2015 is ideal for accompanying any type of grilled red meat, roasts, or stews.

Tasting notes

Carlos Moro Finca Valdehierro is a wine with a very intense cardinal color and purplish rim, with a high layer.

On the nose, it stands out for its frankness, high aromatic intensity, and complexity, marked by echoes of ripe red and black fruit (cherry, blackberry, and sour cherry). Later, tertiary aromas typical of its aging appear, among which licorice, vanilla, coffee, and clove stand out, with a subtle and elegant mineral touch of graphite.

On the palate, it is tasty, well-structured, with a fleshy and velvety passage. Gustatively, it enjoys abundant fruity nuances, which are perfectly assembled with a careful aging in oak barrels (spicy notes). Long and complex final persistence, with notes of red fruit, roasted flavors, and echoes of licorice.

The winery

Bodega CM de Matarromera
Founded in 2014 in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Bodega CM de Matarromera (D.O.Ca. Rioja) is another remarkable project by the renowned Castilian-Leonese winemaker Carlos Moro, owner of Bodegas Familiares Matarromera. This venture was born from Carlos Moro's desire to expand Bodegas Familiares Matarromera and become part of a denomination of origin as prestigious and iconic as Rioja (prior to the creation of Bodega CM de Matarromera, Bodegas Familiares Matarromera included only wineries within the denominations of origin influenced by the Duero River).

A business project aimed at producing high-end wines and sharing the philosophy upon which Bodegas Familiares Matarromera is founded: innovation, respect for sustainability and the environment, and the pursuit of the highest quality. Bodega CM de Matarromera owns 30 hectares of its own vineyards distributed across various plots located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra and Labastida, as well as 60 controlled hectares situated in these towns and Ábalos.

The winery's facilities feature an impressive 300-meter-long underground cellar that houses 2,000 American and French oak barrels. Currently, Bodega CM de Matarromera produces the brands CM and Oinoz (D.O.Ca. Rioja). Additionally, this initiative also includes other select estate wines from symbolic vineyards in other denominations of origin, such as Toro, Rueda, Ribera del Duero, and Cigales.
