General Information

With Château La Conseillante 2021, we are probably facing one of the most outstanding vintages in the recent history of the centenary estate, owned by the Nicolas family. Rich, aromatic, and balanced, this magnificent red wine has been rated 94 points by wine critic Tim Atkin.

The secret to the success of Château La Conseillante lies in its meticulously cared-for vineyard, which spans 12 hectares divided into 18 micro-plots, unchanged since the Nicolas family lineage arrived in 1871. This has allowed, over the years, more thorough control over the vines and their fruits, resulting in their increasing quality.

Château La Conseillante 2021 is a blend dominated, as expected, by merlot, the star variety of Pomerol. This grape contributed roundness, sweetness, and fullness, thanks also to the unique clay soil terroir where the 35-year-old vines grow. The complement of cabernet franc, planted on sandy marl, provided structure and freshness. Aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, it was perfectly rounded off. It can be enjoyed from its harvest year to up to 30 years later, like the great wines of Bordeaux.

Tasting notes

Château La Conseillante unveils aromas of black fruits (blackberries, blueberries, ripe plums) with notes of blue flowers such as violets. Hints of tea, chocolate box, and menthol emerge.

On the palate, it presents a medium body with great richness. Elegant and full of vibrancy, with velvety tannins and a finish of great length and strength.

The winery

Château La Conseillante is one of the most important wineries in Pomerol. The Bordeaux estate owes its name to Catherine Conseillan, an influential woman who owned the property in the mid-18th century. In 1871, the Nicolas family acquired the château, along with its 12 hectares of vineyards, an area that has remained unchanged to this day, becoming one of its distinguishing features.

Today, the fifth generation of the Nicolas family manages the estate, which, since 2013, has benefited from the consultancy of the renowned winemaker Michel Rolland, who also hails from Pomerol.

Located in the eastern part of the appellation, on the border with Saint-Émilion, Château La Conseillante's vineyard is dominated by merlot, the “black pearl” of Pomerol and, by extension, the rive droite. 80% of the vines, with an average age of 30 years, planted across the 18 micro-plots that make up the vineyard, belong to this variety, while the remaining 20% are cabernet franc. The former grow in clay soils, while the latter thrive on gravel. Rational viticulture, focused on achieving optimal ripeness, yield control, continuous replanting, meticulous sorting, and custom vinification of the fruit from each micro-plot contribute to Château La Conseillante's absolutely unique style. Indeed, its red wines, both its grand vin and Duo de Conseillante, the second label, stand out for their harmony, complexity, and finesse.
