Castroviejo Gran Reserva 2018 is the wine that best defines the philosophy of Bodegas Castroviejo: respect for the land, patience, and excellence. Made only in exceptional vintages, this Gran Reserva is a tribute to the Rioja tradition and the elegance that only time can bestow.
The winery, located in the heart of Rioja Alta, works with its own vineyards on privileged soils for tempranillo, the queen variety of the area, which takes center stage in this red wine, accompanied by graciano and mazuelo in smaller proportions. Their commitment to quality is reflected in every detail: nighttime harvesting to ensure optimal grape temperature, manual cluster selection on a sorting table, controlled fermentation, and prolonged aging in oak barrels that provide complexity and balance.
Castroviejo Gran Reserva 2018 was born from the fruits of a vineyard located in the Las Planas estate, situated on the slopes of Mount Yerga. It then spent 27 months in American and French oak barrels with extra-fine grain, followed by 30 months of bottle aging, a period exceeding the requirements set by the Regulatory Council for a wine of the Gran Reserva category. This has allowed it to develop a fascinating aromatic palette: ripe fruit, balsamic notes, spices, leather, and a background of perfectly integrated noble wood. On the palate, it is silky, broad, and persistent, with an acidity that ensures freshness and longevity.
It is an ideal red wine to accompany hearty dishes such as roasted suckling pig or a beef and mushroom risotto. Served at the right temperature, it becomes the centerpiece of any celebration, evoking the purest essence of Rioja in its noblest form.
Beautiful ruby red color with some tile-like hues.
Surprising nose, with aromas of well-ripened black fruits, well integrated with subtle notes of coconut, vanilla, spices, and balsamic hints provided by the barrel, all over an elegant and complex background dominated by mineral nuances, tobacco, and compote derived from its bottle aging.
Broad and balanced on the palate, silky and very elegant, with good acidity. Long finish and aftertaste filled with subtle mouth aromas.
Pastor Díaz is a family-owned winery located in the Rioja town of Aldeanueva del Ebro. The family has been dedicated to viticulture for several centuries, and interestingly, the last four generations have been led by men with the same name: Gonzalo Pastor. Over time, the family has acquired the best types of soils, altitudes, and the most optimal orientations for their vineyards. In the winery, there is maximum respect for traditional winemaking. Their range of wines includes young reds, crianzas, reservas, gran reservas, and an organic wine, and it is composed of three brands: Castroviejo, Valdejimena, and Castro Real.
Currently, Bodegas Pastor Díaz manages around 130 hectares of vineyards located mainly on the slopes of Mount Yerga, one of the most exclusive areas for vine cultivation in the D.O.Ca. Rioja. Seventy percent of the vines are grown on trellises, while the remaining 30% are cultivated in the traditional bush vine method. The vineyard's altitude ranges between 350 and 600 meters. The winery primarily cultivates tempranillo, along with a small amount of garnacha and graciano.
