El Bierzo is one of Spain's most charming wine regions and is currently experiencing a moment of splendor. Among its highlights is the family winery Casar de Burbia, led by Isidro Fernández, which has established itself as one of the great ambassadors of the area. Their secret: exceptional raw material from old bush-trained mencía vines, cultivated in Valtuille de Arriba, the true heart of El Bierzo. Their most emblematic wine, Casar de Burbia 2021, faithfully reflects the character of the region: it is friendly, approachable, and marked by a distinct Bierzo identity. A high-level offering at a very competitive price.

General Information

The soul of the Casar de Burbia winery lies in this wine: crafted since the beginning of the brand, it reflects its philosophy of bringing the landscape of Valtuille de Arriba into a friendly and accessible wine. All the grapes that nourish Casar de Burbia 2021 come from this village, the most highly regarded in the denomination.

Specifically, this red wine is sourced from small plots, the lowest among the winery's vineyards, cultivated with old Mencía vines (over 60 years) in goblet training on clay soils. Manual harvesting and long fermentation of over two months in 5000 l wooden vats. The wine then matures for two months with its own lees and skins, and finally moves to second- and third-year French oak barrels to age for 12 months.

Each year, the winery incorporates the results of its research on viticulture and winemaking techniques into this wine, making it a red wine in constant evolution.

The winery behind it, Casar de Burbia, is one of the driving forces behind the exceptional quality growth of the D.O. Bierzo. A family-run brand that relies 100% on its own vineyards: 27 hectares spread across more than 250 plots, all located on the slopes of Valtuille de Arriba, the cradle of Bierzo. The vineyards are certified in Organic Agriculture by CAECYL.

Casar de Burbia 2019 (D.O. Bierzo) will pair perfectly with duck breast or stuffed eggplants.

Tasting notes

Overflowing with cherry, blueberry, and floral aromas on the nose, this is a vibrant and spicy Mencía with polished, silky tannins, balanced acidity, and a long, bright, mineral finish.

The winery

Bodegas Casar de Burbia

In the early 1980s, a time when many farmers in Bierzo were getting rid of their vines because they were not generating significant profits, Nemesio Fernández began acquiring old vineyards in the best areas of this Leonese region, around Valtuille. It was not until 1989 that the Casar de Burbia project was launched. Isidro, Nemesio's son, is now at the helm of this winery based in Carracedelo.

Casar de Burbia boasts a fantastic viticultural heritage based almost exclusively on the mencía variety. It has 27 hectares of vineyards spread across more than 250 plots, all located on the slopes of Valtuille de Arriba, the cradle of Bierzo. The vineyards are certified Organic Agriculture by CAECYL. Without a doubt, this is one of the wineries driving the exceptional quality growth of the D.O. Bierzo.
