At Vinoselección we’ve been lucky enough to bring back an outstanding Rioja that century-old winery Carlos Serres hadn’t made for nearly two decades: Carlos Serres 5 Barricas. Following the success this label has enjoyed since 2020, now’s the turn of Carlos Serres 5 Barricas Gran Reserva 2016, the most sophisticated version. An exclusive red that’s smooth, flavoursome and aromatic with a moreish, pleasant mid-palate.

Carlos Serres had not produced this top brand aimed at the winery’s VIP customers for 17 years – a red made from the contents of 5 selected barrels (approximately 1,500 litres). In 2020 we had the honour of reviving this label exclusively for Vinoselección. Since then it’s become one of our biggest hits with members. Carlos Serres 5 Barricas Gran Reserva 2016 is the latest edition, which brings you the best of the 2016 vintage.
This wine is a blend of (mainly) Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo and has been aged for 24 months in French and American oak.
The Carlos Serres winery is named after its founder, a well-known wine consultant born in Orleans who was a pioneer in setting up business in Rioja after the phylloxera epidemic spread to France. Impressed by the grape-growing conditions in Rioja, in 1896 he established his own winery in Haro’s station, where he introduced ageing in Bordeaux style. He was also a pioneer in exporting Rioja wine. The Vivanco family bought Bodegas Carlos Serres in 2000. The new owners revamped the style of its wines.
Carlos Serres wines come from the vineyards on El Estanque, a 60-hectare estate that’s located in Haro (La Rioja), like the winery itself. Its calcareous-clay, gravelly soils are well-suited to the traditional grape varieties.
Carlos Serres 5 Barrica Gran Reserva 2016 (D.O.Ca. Rioja) is ideal with Ibérico pork with peppers or roast partridge.
The historic winery Carlos Serres is named after its founder, a renowned wine consultant born in Orleans, who was a pioneer in settling in Rioja after the arrival of phylloxera in France. Amazed by the winemaking conditions offered by Rioja, Carlos Serres founded his own winery in the Barrio de la Estación of Haro in 1896. From there, he became a precursor of wine aging following the Bordeaux model. He also stood out as a pioneer in the export of Rioja wine. In the year 2000, the Vivanco family acquired 100% of Bodegas Carlos Serres, leading to a significant renewal of the winery's wines and the construction of new facilities in the municipality of Haro, but outside the Barrio de la Estación.
The wines of Carlos Serres are made with grapes from the El Estanque estate, which spans 60 hectares and is located in Haro (La Rioja), as is the winery itself. The soils of the estate, clay-limestone with the presence of gravel, are ideal for cultivating traditional grape varieties. The winery is committed to using concrete tanks for winemaking, aiming to maximize the fruity expression of each variety (the porosity of concrete allows for micro-oxygenation).
In July 2020, Bodegas Carlos Serres achieved the Wineries for Climate Protection certification. This seal recognizes the commitment to sustainability and environmental care, currently held by only 27 wineries in Spain.
