Brunus 2024 brings together the qualities of a typical aged red wine from Montsant, sobriety and classicism, combined with the innovation and new directions of the winery that produces it.
The grapes come from small crus of excellent quality located on clay-limestone and sandy soils. Vines aged between 25 and 50 years, trained in bush form and with low yields, bathed by a Mediterranean climate with continental influence, especially those facing north, at an altitude of 700-800 meters. These conditions give the wines of Portal del Montsant the subtlety, fragrance, and complexity that are their hallmark.
To produce the red wine Brunus , the grapes ferment at a controlled temperature and macerate for an average of 20 days with open pump-overs and gentle pigeages. After aging for 12 months in French oak barrels, the resulting wine stands out for its elegance, aromaticity, and freshness.
The winery Portal del Montsant, part of the Raventós Codorníu group, is characterized by its meticulous work with the region's historical varieties: Garnacha and Cariñena. Located in a building that has been producing wines since the early 20th century, the winery crafts this aged red wine under the D.O. Montsant designation and names it after Saint Bruno of Cologne, who lived in the Priorat region in 1194 and was one of the promoters of vineyard cultivation.
Brunus 2024 pairs well with hearty dishes from traditional cuisine. A very good choice to accompany stews, feathered game dishes, and aged cheeses.
The bright edges embrace a crimson red.
Notes of currant, cherry, and blueberry on the nose, with mineral hints.
Soft yet present tannins with light spicy notes on the palate.
The aim of Portal del Montsant is to showcase, through its wines, the character, expression, and the purest essence of the cariñenas and garnachas typical of the region. These grapes are sourced from small plots with controlled production and are vinified and worked separately to extract the maximum potential from each of them.
The wines from this winery hark back to the origins of viticulture in the region and take their name from Saint Bruno of Cologne, founder of the monastic order of the Carthusian monks of Escaladei and responsible for the beginning of viticulture in the area.
