Roda, the youngest winery in the iconic Barrio de la Estación in Haro, was one of the key drivers of Rioja's transformation in the 1990s, with innovative wines that have achieved international recognition, such as Cirsion. In a more accessible range, Bodegas Roda Sela represents their entry-level red wine. The 2024 vintage has been aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, achieving a fresh, balanced profile that remains true to the house style.

Bodegas Roda Sela 2024 is the youngest and most accessible expression from Bodegas Roda. It is made 100% with Tempranillo, and its grapes come from bush vines aged between 15 and 30 years, cultivated as bush vines and managed with sustainable practices. Fermentation, both alcoholic and malolactic, occurs spontaneously in French oak vats, and the wine matures for 12 months in semi-new barrels of the same origin.

Located in the historic Barrio de la Estación in Haro, Roda is the youngest among its illustrious neighbors. Founded in the late 1980s by Mario Rotllant and Carmen Daurella, the winery was born with a clear vision: to reinterpret Rioja through vineyard excellence. Under the technical direction of Agustín Santolaya, Roda became one of the major drivers of the new Rioja style in the 1990s, focusing on wines that reflect the soul of very specific plots.

The search for the ideal vineyards was meticulous and prolonged. After years of studying soils and microclimates, they selected around twenty plots, of which only the 17 most outstanding are vinified each year. All of them are planted with old vines on poor soils and are cultivated under principles of environmentally respectful viticulture. A great example of this is the Bodegas Roda Sela 2024, a Rioja that is a must-have in your collection.

Tasting notes

Color: Good intensity with a red background and rim.

Nose: Intense, very fruity, with a profile of red fruits, in the range of well-ripened cherries. The wood is perfectly integrated; in the aging of SELA, only used barrels are employed. In addition to the dominant fruity sensation in the wine, spicy notes and even a certain mineral character appear, adding complexity. It creates a very pleasant, fine, long, and delicate ensemble, likely with greater volume and structure than other vintages of SELA.

Palate: Medium volume, very fruity, with the presence of the cherries described on the nose. Excellent texture. There is freshness, well-supported by a velvety body. It leaves a pleasant fresh sensation of red fruit in the aftertaste that lingers in the mouth for a long time.

Under the direction of Agustín Santolaya (manager of the firm), Roda has been one of the leading wineries in the Rioja renewal of the 1990s. In the late 1980s, during a period of transformation in Spain's winemaking model, Mario Rotllant and Carmen Daurella arrived in La Rioja with the passionate intention of creating a project that would bring something new to the world of wine. Although it seemed that everything had already been done in the centuries-old Rioja, they decided to embark on their adventure. The name of the winery, Roda, comes from the initials of the surnames of both founders (Ro-Da).

In 1991, the philosophy was forged, and Roda quickly positioned itself at the forefront of the best Rioja wineries, thanks to the involvement of an oversized technical team. They decided to work exclusively with native red varieties, such as Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Graciano, fully respecting the vintage, without using wines from other years to standardize or refresh a harvest. Roda wines are wines that draw the essence of the vineyard, soil, climate, and landscape, crafted for enjoyment. The secret of their success lies not only in the magnificent raw materials sourced from the best ecosystems in the area, from which the 17 best are vinified each year, but also in the application of the best winemaking technologies.
